There should NOT be any "trimming" needed.
The headspace simply gets adjusted to suit the new bolt.

I have the whole bolt head, and firing pin assembly for a savage .338

And swapping bolt heads won't have much effect on extraction issues.

The cool thing about a savage is the barrel can be headspaced with relative ease.

Since you have a barrel nut. there is no need for a reamer, a lathe, or anything else but a set of gages, a barrel nut wrench and something to hold the action in.

You can thread the barrel down on the gage and dial in a bit more as the factory recommends an initial setting of .002" shorter then a go gage prior to proofing the rifle, the measured amount of seat the threads take upon proofing.

So yes they can be head spaced easily

All this info can be found in Vol II the bolt action rifle by Stewart Otsen

I ended up going to Applied Kinetics, wow what a great job.

He was open saturday, stopped by and he wad the new bolt head installed in about 2 minutes. Check the headspace, and was out the door in 15.

                    Great job.
