    870 bolt chrome

I was looking to upgrade my bolt to chrome but, they are $100. It a third of the price of the gun! So is there any reason I can't have a, chome shop do this? Is chrome on gun parts different from car parts? I sent an email to wmd over a, week ago. No response. So I think there out. I want to smooth out the bolt and keep some rust protection.

Update: The first sentence Never mind you are already aware of the aftermarket option. Not worth the money in my opinion either. I'll leave my post incase someone else is intrested.

Midway sells a Chrome Bolt for the 870 12G. It's out of stock but it's expected to be in stock later this month. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/574...ome?cm_vc=S014

I would not send out your bolt to have it plated. Chrome is thick and in all likelihood cause issues with fit.

if you just want to change the look send youR bolt to be Cerokoted. it will look good and not cause fit issues.

And as far as upgrades being expensive, Well thats the name of the game. Upgrade

        Yes.
Car part chrome is applied very thick, usually over copper plating on top of the steel.
Gun parts are "hard chrome" which needs to be applied VERY thin so that it does not cause fitting problems.
Tightly fitted parts will need to be made undersized before adding the chrome so that they will still fit afterwards.
This is no job for a bumper chrome shop.

I cerokoted my brothers 870 Express and it significantly improved the feel of the action. but I cerokoted the whole weapon too so the magazine tube, action bars, bolt and the inside of the receiver were all coated and cerokote slides very nice on it self.

              I do cerokote.

There is no reason or advantage to chrome a 870 bolt other then to enhance the "Look". Chrome plating will not add significant dimensional increases to affect function/safety, and certainly not in the large tolerances of 870 Remington chassis/receivers.

You would pay about $100 for a lot charge to have your current bolt chromed at most shops.

Save the money for shells to practice with in various forms of competition.

I was thinking of cerakote in parkerized color. I like the look of park but want it to be a bit stronger.

                    Why not just parkerize it?
Parkerizing is an excellent finish for a bolt.

Did this for my personal 870. Looks awesome. (Did the trigger and shell lifter too). Soak it in a bag with vinegar over night. 00 steel wool, and then buffing compounds till mirror shiny. Simply awesome. I don't thread check too much, feel free to PM if you have questions.

No that's why it's posted. I thought about striping the bolt and polishing but I want rust protection. It I shot it every day I would just strip it.
