    New AR builder

Ok, I have watched videos, read instructions, and obtained parts for three brand new ARs.

Seems straightforward, and with the exception of a castle nut wrench, and a mag block, I probably don't have to buy any special tools.

My question is, is the mag block necessary? Can't I just use a magazine carefully?

And thanks for any other advice you may have....

never used a mag block for building a lower. The upper holder you will need if you plan if building your uppers too.

I said " mag BLOCK" , not lock. A tool to help hold a lower in a vise while installing parts.

mag block not reccomended for torqueing barrel.. All mags must be blocked to 10 rounds unless you have any grandfathered in. But since these are your first ars don't see that happening. Use bullet button or go featureless. You should use vise block for your upper when torqueing barrel.

If you're going to build the upper, get a multi-tool and an upper vise block. Otherwise, get the multi-tool and a roll pin starter set and some punches.

Yeah , the multi tool seems necessary, but some videos show that the roll pin starter, and punches are not needed. I think I'll just go ahead and get the mag block, it will come in handy more than once. My uppers are already assembled. So basically just assembling lowers here.

Saw a video where they just pinched the end of a roll pin, and then used channel locks with the half jaw that contacts the lower wrapped in tape, to squeeze the pins in place. They used a second set of needle nosed pliers to hold the pin in position while pushing it in with the locks.

OP, the mag block is cheap and makes things a little easier to hold in your bench vise.

IME, this roll pin punch is the best money you will spend. Everything else is in your garage..

You don't really need a mag block at all. It was good that you bought the punches, they will help. If you need any other tools and cannot find them I have some you can use.

I haven't needed a mag block for mine.

I just use leather strips and use a vise.

I'm gonna make my own out of wood I think.
