2 day practical rifle @ front sight

Taking the 2day practical rifle at Front sight soon and would like to hear from someone who has taken the course. Any advice on whether to run iron sights or optics, do i really need elbow pads, what distances most shots will be from, and any equipment that you recommend??? I have taken the 4 day pistol course before and have taken a one day rifle course as well elsewhere. any help would be appreciated, thanks Calguns

You be shooting from the 7(pretty sure) out to the 100 yard line. It'll be a controlled pair to the thorazic with compensated head shots at the closer yard markers. If you have good eyes go with irons, if you eyes are aging or visually challenged like me a 1-4x optic is optimal. Whatever you run, you'll want a fast presentation and get on them sights quick.
Pads are optional, again if you have soft knees or just not really limber pads are a plus. When you do the prone presentation properly it is quick and really easy on the knees and elbows. It you go fast but not smooth, it'll scuff your knees and elbows quite well on the gravel and astro turf.
Being your just doing the 2 day rifle, there will be no skills test. This equates to zero pressure. My advice is take it slow and practice the steps slowly and smoothly to ingrain good muscle memory. Have fun

Thanks! I am trying to decide whether to get more practice w irons or take a class using optics so if 100yrds is the max distance for the 2 day maybe ill go irons

Any good recommendations on a good pair of electronic hearing protection that I wont knock off in a rifle class????? I was looking at proears??? Is ear protection that doesnt go all the way around the ear work as well at those that do?

The flatter the better in any case. In particular the style they teach requires keeping the stock up high as a result you will be always pushing the muffs with the stock. I use both plugs and Howard Leight Impact Sport and still in prone position I have to push my firing side muff off.

Do yourself a favor, put in foamies or molded or Surefire plugs. Then the electronic ears over them turned up all the way. There isn't a headphone made that you won't knock off in this class (or at least break the seal), and it's not worth the risk to your hearing.

Might as well go with the howard Leight Sports for budget. They're good enough for pistol by themselves, outdoors. Indoors I double up, YMMV.

when will you be taking the class? I'm taking the 4 day rifle in April.
