Newbie interested in IDPA in the Bay Area but I have some questions

I'm interested into getting IDPA just so I can get used to moving around and shooting. I know Richmond Rod and Gun club has a intro class that you can take and that will let you compete after.

My one question is how strict are they about the weight of your handgun? I want to compete with a 1911 Nighthawk GRP Recon and it weights basically around 42oz? I'm probably just going to stick with local club IDPA stuff.

As another newbie looking at this, I'm also interested.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

allowable CDP pistol weight increased from 41 to 42 oz. as of August 1st, 2010.
Most important thing is to jump in and not get all hung up on the rule book. Make sure you have a good holster and belt (like a BladeTech and Wilderness Tactical). You will only be allowed to have 2 mags on your belt. Electric ears are good also. Find the closest match to you and get in touch with the match director, tell hiim you are new and interested, go from there.

Here is the NorCal list for competitions.

        Thanks Lee for the info.

I looked at the rules and it currently says The unloaded firearm with the heaviest magazine must weigh 43.00 oz/1219.0 grams or less.

I looked at the Nighthawk GRP Recon weight and it's 39oz but it has some modifications done to it and I think it's probably over the weight limit seeing how the magazine is 2.0oz. I was hoping that this won't stop me from just having fun and learning which is what I really want.

I guess if I sign up and just show up to a intro class they stop deny me just because I have a 1911 that's a few oz over the limit.

No one is going to weigh you gun at a local match, just go and have fun.

If the gun is overly modified, it might move you from CDP to ESP.

Cool. I just wanted to be able to join the fun and not really compete but it would be nice to see where I stand against the other competitors. Another question on the equipment.

I was thinking of getting a kydex holster, something from griffon industries or bravo concealment. I'm guess these are ok because they cover the trigger? Anybody have any experience with them?

Also as for the belt. I have a padded belt right now, but i'm guessing I have to get a belt that will fit through the loops of my belts. Is that correct also?

I don't mind the price, I'll be taking some handgun defense classes also in the future so I think it would be a good investment.

Thanks for all the help, I'll be heading out to the local club matches once I get my Nighthawk from jail!

                    Thanks for the tip HopetonBrown.

How many mags do you carry? Should I just get the 2 mag carrier?

                        My advice,
Dont be a newbie and get into IDPA. Start with a fun Run n' Gun match like Deadwood Boys action Pistol. Less rules and more movement. Also, you get to see how you did that day. There's a match 6/7 and they are much more newbie friendly. Less rules and an easy way to get comfortable with runnin' and gunnin'.

Are you talking about the one that's down in Socal? Because I wouldn't be able to make that one.

I'm one of the IDPA club contacts for Richmond. We don't weigh guns for local club matches.

Not true... we both honor each others. PM if you (or anyone for that matter) are interested in the orientation class... they are the first Sat of every month.

USI doesnt run the class... Diablo Action Pistol, Part of Diablo Rod and Gun sponsors the class.
