Where should I start with my AR15?

I am looking to find a rifle only competition locally within the next few months so I can see how good (or how bad) I am. I am typically better than my fellow shooting friends when it comes to the long guns. I have been shooting for over 40 years, but never competed in any rifle matches.

I am looking for a "newbie friendly" rifle competition where I can use my standard AR15 (not a NM type) and have a fun day of shooting. I'd like to stay in So Cal and or the IE and not be surrounded by super serious competitors.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated!

Action / combat rifle only match; http://jvindustries.net/match.html

Phantom strike match every thirst Sunday at RAAHAGUE SHOOTING ENTERPRISES 14995 RIVER RD CORONA CA

I am told the match is very "newbie friendly" but with any match with the time and money there will ALWAYS be very serious motivated competitors.

I shot my first ever carbine match there last month. They were VERY welcoming and helpful. There are some monster shooters there, but I see that as a good thing, since I can watch and learn from the best.

I went to their website, found things like categories and round count, but no info on their format/courses of fire.

Can anyone tell me how their competition works? What distance, targets, etc?

Mostly 5-15 yards, the farthest is about 100 yards. Search Phantom Strike match, Norco Running Gun in Youtube. This are tactical carbine style match. If you want the more traditional rifle match check Angeles Range website. Hope that help.

The Phantom Strike is basically a USPSA match for rifles with 3 gun scoring. It is not a combat match nor is it tactical. One stage uses auto reset mini poppers at 80 yards from 3 shooting positions, the other 5 are hoser stages. There will be clays imbedded in paper targets here and there. Scoring is 2 anywhere on paper, or 1 A zone. Clays must break, steel must fall. There will be a dozen USPSA Grand Masters, but just shoot in CA legal (10 round) Iron division and you will take 1st place in division (as the only shooter). West End in Devore also runs a rifle only match.

1st place is always nice... but not if you are the only entrant!

I'll give it a go! But it is a time + penalty type match? Any actual running involved? My knees aren't what they used to be...

Time plus for targets not neutralize or not engaged. There is not a lot of running per se but there is movement like your USPSA matches.

Stage 1 is usually the 80yrd stage with 6 mini poppers that you have to engage from 3 position (one standing, kneeling and sometimes prone).
