    First Tactical Match-I'm hooked!

I'm writing this up in case anyone is having second thoughts about trying a match for the first time. In short, if you're considering shooting in one just do it!

My match was called "Snipergeddon" at the Mill Creek Rifle Club in DeSoto, Kansas. They hold one or two of these style matches per year and I decided to enter this year since I just joined the club and am new to tactical style shooting.

The match consisted of 6 stages.

    1) "Cold and Bold" - A cold bore timed shot at an unknown distance. This is the first competition of the day. (1 round) The competitor has two minutes to move from the starting point to the firing line (rifle is prepositioned on the firing line), find his/her target, estimate the range and shoot.

This was about a 320 yard shot from a berm to looking across the high power range at a wall of targets. You were given a number, had to find your target with that number on it, and fire. It looked something like this.

2)"Wild Ride" - Last year the targets moved. This year the shooter will be "chauffeured" around the range. Each shooter will fire 10 rounds at his/her designated target 100 yards away from a moving vehicle.

This stage was on an M35 on a gravel road. Found out how difficult it was to get it on the paper, let alone on target. Tough, but fun.

    3) "Gambling man" - 200 yards - shoot every decreasing targets in sequence . If you hit a target you earn point and may shot the next smaller target for even more points. If you miss any target your score is zero. Stop shooting whenever you want i.e. before you miss a target.

4)"Spray and Pray" - Each shooter has 30 seconds to shoot either a 6", 12", 18" or a 24" gong at 300 yards as often as possible. (up to 30 rounds). Please note: The smaller the gong the higher the shot score.

Learned a lesson the hard way on this stage. I wanted to really be able to see the gong, and dialed up my magnification. Big mistake because it took a long time to find the gong costing me points.

5)"Enigma" - A scored even, each shooter has to engage 5 targets with only 5 bullets in sequence, each target is at an unknown distances. The further the target the higher the score (<300 yards).

4" targets at 200 and 300 yards spanning about 50-60 yards across that you have to engage.

6)"Last Man Standing" - 500 yard shooting on a 500 yard NRA high power target. This is a progressive elimination event. Shooters start by stand and having unloaded weapons. The targets are hidden from the shooter's sight. When the targets appear all competitor lie down and load their rifle with one round and shoot their assigned target. The lowest scoring shooter, anyone who missed or did not shot is eliminated. After each round the process is repeated. The length of time for the first shot is 20 seconds. But, the time decreases by a second for each successive round until the time limit is 8 seconds, at which time it will remain 8 seconds for the duration of the competition. If multiple relays are required we will have a semifinal and a final round. The top 18 shooters from all relays will shoot together until only one competitor is left. This is the final competition of the day. (No more than 35 rounds)

All in all, I learned a lot more than I would have with 10 trips to the range by myself. It was a blast, so whatever your hesitations are, ignore them and enter!

wow man for your first one that match seems intense. I also started doing action pistol shoots and i got hooked on it pretty hard but i have been doing more like small stages with the wheel of death as we call it but once you start and get hooked its all over man,i've been looking all over trying to get into actual uspca matches to take it further so i hope you further your abition toward it too and you will notice a big difference in your shooting by competing in these matches also.
