    Tactical Vest Or.....

I plan on taking a few of the Falcon and/or TASC classes for rifle first and pistol later and have been looking for magazine holsters for the P-Mags and am not finding many if any for a belt but I'm finding a lot of options for building a vest. What are the pro's and cons to building one of those full on vests for the classes? I plan to work my way through all 3 classes (i.e. TASC 101, 202, 303, and same for FOG)

If you don't want to make an initial investment, I can loan you a USGI cartridge belt and M16 mag pouch that holds three mags. Really, it's the minimum to get by. You don't need to look like a DEVGRU assaulter to get through my courses, just a functional way of carrying your equipment.

It's not the money, I'm just thinking of what's smarter to use to take several class'. I don't want to spend the money on buying a pouches for a belt then find out I need to switch to a vest when I start using carbine and pistol in one course.

I don't know what you mean by vest. Do you mean plate carrier?
Yes, a plate carrier or vest with MOLLE webbing.

I recently bought a Costa Leg Rig which has five Taco pouches, two for rifle magazines and three for pistol magazines. I really wanted something that I could throw on quick if I needed magazines. I opted for the leg rig over a chest rig because it was minimal and wouldn't interfere with prone.

ITW FASTMAG: high-impact resistant polymer case for quick mag draw and ammo reload.

Just get a couple of these.

^^^ This. Start with the minimum equipment an instructor lists for a class. Remember its a class and a learning experience. See what other students have and pay attention to what seems to work or not work for them as they do well or have problems in the drills. See what the instructor uses and ask why. It's very common to see students who buy all the tacticool gear before a first class to have nothing but problems with the stuff the guy at the store counter said was GTG and just what they needed. Go to your class and learn, observe and ask questions of others regarding the how's and why's of their equipment. Then make incremental, informed purchases before the next class. Don't be surprised if your equipment /kit requirements change as your skill set improves and the problem solving becomes more complex.

Of course no matter how thoughtful and judicious your purchases, you will still end up like the rest of us with all kinds of crap that seemed useful at the moment of purchase but ends up sitting in a box somewhere.

You could also build up a 'battle-belt'

I use an HSGI SureGrip™ Padded Belt outfitted with 1x Pistol Taco, 2x Double Decker Taco, 1x X2R Taco (front to back weak side) Then 2x Pistol Taco and Holster (front to back strong side)

The 'tacos' are from the same company here

+1 for the battle belt, all your gear will be compatible if you ever decide you want to transition to a plate-carrier/chest rig, and it is very comfortable.

You can get a very cheap setup with a generic 2" duty belt and a Condor battle belt for <$50, but having tried both -- I'd recommend the HSGI setup linked above.

The final option is putting molle pouches on your normal belt. With some 550 cord and imagination, you can configure the molle straps as belt loops.

Get a dump pouch too. I made the mistake of grabbing an empty mag during the TASC rifle class Stan was right next to me too.

Start off with the basics - belt mounted mag pouches and a dump pouch. From there, you can decide what your needs will be as you progress in your training and as the courses dictate.

I went this route with a condor battle belt and participated in the FOG 1.0 course, most in the course were wearing lbe/plate carriers. I talked to the guys about the next level up course and they recommended a plate carrier for the next class.

Now I'm just trying to decide between the TAG mayhem and the TAG rampage. Can anybody give me any insight into the Rampage?
