    Beginner class or personal instruction?

I've been shooting at the range for a couple years now. Nothing serious, just fun. But I want to get better and maybe do some competitions. Which would be better? Should enroll in a class or get private instruction? And where is good place to go. I'm in the Rancho Cucamonga. Thanks

I'd say, either one. The private instruction would be better, if you can afford it. Just be sure you get what you want out of the class. Tactical vs. bullseye vs. "run and gun" competitions are very different.

Personal instruction. The basic class will go over a bunch of stuff you already know (or should) since you have been shooting a bit.

1st identify what type of training you want, then find someone who specializes in that type of training. Competition based training is not the same as tactical training.

I assume you are looking at competing in action pistol? If so, can you safely and quickly present from a holster and get good hits? If not, I would consider a group class and save individual instruction for later assuming money is an issue.

Norco Running Gun USPSA runs a intorduction training class once a month. Or, as already stated, if you can keep your finger off the trigger while moving, and draw safely, show up and jump in. I am assuming you have a good gun belt, holster, extra mags and mag pouches... Check USPSA.com, IDPA.com and BrianEnos.com for more info.

Normally you would start with classes. Since there are more participants splitting the instructor's costs and fee, it costs less.

You normally don't get anything out of private instruction until you have exhausted all the classes offered in your area.

And you can bet the private instruction is going to cost you dearly.

You'd also be getting less attention...to address your issues

While that is a way, if you can afford it, private instruction will cover more ground faster...since all the attention is on what you are doing; you'll be getting correction/instruction after each short string

A lot depends on how you learn best. With private instruction, you can take a couple of hours, or half a day, of instruction, and go practice those skills on your own. Then you can take another few hours to fine tune those skills and build on them. It is more of a learn at your own pace situation.

The cost might be higher per hour, but about the same for the skills learned

I never had any training with a handgun and used to go out to the range and goof around. Thought I could do some action pistol comps and did a safety course. Did my first IDPA the next day and realized I wasn't even a decent shot. Decided to do a 1 on 1 with an instructor to give me beginner handgun. I like the private class cuz it was to my pace. I learned the basics and we fixed some problems Ive had, like flinching. Now Im doin some form of action pistol 2 times a month. Id do a class first then go out and do a safety course for the type of comps you wanna do. Good luck to you.

Do you have a training budget? If so how much?

You want to learn to shoot a handgun accurately at a distance compete in Bullseye with 22's shooting with either hand. Read a few articles and the other competitors will help you.

Then for Tactical move on to IDPA.

Wow thanks for the great info. For right now, I want to be more consistent and lock down fundamentals. Any suggestions on classes in the Inland empire or LA county?

                            Take a group class first.

                            Practice what you learned.

You'll identify what you need to work on.

Then consider private instruction, but don't rule out taking an intermediate class instead.
