    Ready to Start Competing?......

I've been thinking it might be fun to enter some competitions, but I have no idea if I'd be in the running or not. So, I thought I'd post a photo of my latest target. Except for 20 head shots @ 10 yards, the remaining 100 rounds or so were at 15 yards. Any and all comments are appreciated.

I'm with kmca....what kind of competition? Don't worry about how good you are now. Worry only about how much you'll improve once you start competing.
There's a thousand other skills to work on besides shooting groups while standing still. Come out and compete and learn to draw, shoot on the move, engage multiple targets, shoot weak/strong hand, change mags, etc.

What kind of gun are you shooting?

'Don't really know what kind of competition. I'm using a Glock 34 with Trijicon HD night sights. Not interested in any quick draw, but just about any distance from 7 to 25 yards would be fine. But I don't know if I'm "ready" or not which is why I posted my target. Rim fire might be kinda interesting but all I've got is my father's old 1940 model Montgomery Wards Western Field single shot bolt action 22 that I added a scope to when I was 15. I don't know if it would be competitive. And hand guns interest me more anyway.

Hmmmmm......some of those things sound pretty interesting. I just ordered a Bravo Concealment holster but it's designed to work with my X300u. Does anyone shoot with a light installed?

Shooting on the move and at multiple targets sounds like fun. Is there a place or organization in the South Bay Area that does that? I live and work in the Silicon Valley.

Find some local USPSA or IDPA clubs near you and get out there. Get at least 5-6 mags, a good belt, mag holsters, and you'll be ready to start competing. In addition, try to find some GSSF matches...they're for Glock shooters and, though I haven't shot one, I believe they shoot everything from low ready without drawing. You won't see anyone competing with a light and night sights are rarely seen on competition guns. But run what you have and figure out what works for you as you start to improve.

Don’t worry about being ready, If you are like most of us, chances are your first matches going to humble you anyway . I know it did me. I usually tell people that as long as you can safely handle a firearm then you are ready to start competing. Just go out and have fun. You should have a decent holster and enough mags to carry around 50 rounds on you. I always think of it like a game of golf; I am not there to beat other people, just to improve and have some fun.

I don’t know where you are located but the Deadwood Boys Action Pistol match in Piru is a blast and is also very noob friendly. It is a little lower key then USPSA or IDPA. Here is a link to that if you are interested: http://www.deadwoodboys.org/ There is a wide range of gun skills there from super fast and accurate to not so fast or accurate. I am okay with accuracy but I am slow as can be. Here is a link to one of the stages I shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3GlARHMGlA There are a total of six stages with different configurations and the configurations for all station are changed for every match.

Richmond and Diablo are your closest USPSA and IDPA clubs. You will have to attend their SAFE HANDGUN CLASS.

no amount of square range shooting will tell you where you're at until there is a timer, other shooters and a cof to remember.

your first concern should be answering the question, am i safe gun handler and can i listen to instructions?

second should be do i have close to the proper equipment. i say close because most places are very accommodating to a new shooter.

finally, do you have a lot of free weekends and ammo? hahaha. 'cause if you like it, it's easy to do all the dang time.
Competition is where you find out you're slow, can't see well, are not accurate, have poor gun handling, can't visualize, have equipment that doesn't work and either accept it OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

The Action Pistol Club is a place to shoot and have fun. Our club allows you to practice techniques learned and developed through competition and defensive shooting.

There are action pistol matches in the bay every week:

                        DAP @ USI Concord
Richmond Hotshots @ Richmond Rod & Gun
                        TASC @ Chabot

Any of their calsses are very informative and intructors are really helpful. Have fun!

Reeds indoor range has a shooting league/competition thing I think, they have a schedule and info on their website, maybe something to check out since you're in the area. I haven't tried it myself but I've been meaning to look into it.

If "tactical" type shooting might be more your style, there's a club that shoots at the Metcalf range on the first and third Sundays of the month.

BTW, your 34 is a great gun for the Production Division in USPSA, provided you haven't made any external modifications.
