At WEGC, we usually handle this one-on-one with each new shooter by squadding them with some seasoned shooters.
They get a 5 minute talk before they start and then constant monitoring throughout the match to catch any bad habits right away.

    Most work performed while-you-wait.

A structured course is always a good idea. Good going for putting one together.

Okay you told the guy not to break the 180, now he's got 40 new pieces of advice running threw his head, and he runs by a target, forgets about the 180, turns around and shoots it. DQ right? Well we probably just lost a shooter in the process.
In my squad (yes, it's a clique of guys that almost always shoot together), we are very welcoming to new shooters.
2/3 of the squad will be helping and watching.
Those first few stages are critical and the shooter will often spend time against a berm with an unloaded gun first, especially when they have never drawn from a holster before.

I know exactly what you are saying though and it's very noble to offer the instruction for free.
If you get a big turnout and need extra helping hands, I'm there for you as long as I'm not at some other match.

A comment I had started to write, then didn't, and now think I will a day later - the requirement of 400 rounds seems like a lot to ask, doesn't it? Ammo isn't cheap, do you really need to go through 400 to break someone in at a basic level?

(please note I'm not trying to be negative! and think the idea is great just bringing up that since it would seem to be a rather expensive hurdle)

Good, point, but a match will run from 150 - 200 rounds. Better to have to much then not enough.

Agreed - it would make more (economic) sense to *require* 200 for this introductory course, halving the price. Suggest more ("200 required, 250+ suggested"), but require less.

Assume $10/bx at WallyWorld for WWB 9mm, that's the difference between $40 of ammo and $80, a price difference which could increase the chances of someone "testing the waters" to be more inclined to come out and learn (since they're paying $65 already, it starts adding up with gas).

I think that this is a great idea!

I know that when I started 25 years ago I would have loved to have a class like this. Luckily I had a good friend who led me by the hand through the whole break in process so I continued on. I shot IPSC for about 5 years starting on 1980 in South Carolina, took a break for 5 years and then shot for another 4 years with the Stockton Practical Shooters in N. Cal but I haven't tried it since 1993.

If I lived closer to LA I'd jump right on this!

400 rounds will go very fast. Before major matches we would shoot 800-1000 per day. The good thing is if you dont shoot everthing you can take the rest home. Dave I have been trying to get out but lately it has been hard, Val is 7 months pregnant and work is been really busy. I was actually thinking of you today with the Silver Buckle Match this weekend but it will be like Area 2 and Ill have to shoot the next one. And anyone interested should come see a 7' tall giant rail like speed freak on the targets.

If the difference of a couple hundred rounds is going to make or break their budget, competetive shooting is not for them.
