2 Gun Shoots

I was wondering if anybody does two gun shoots. IE Pistol, Rifle. I feel a shot gun is a very limited weapon and I have not desire to shoot it in competition. Im sure some other guys might be interested in a two gun shoot as well. Thanks in advance.

I know the local 3 gun comps here only do 2 guns, whether it is pistol rifle or pistol shotgun, I have also seen them do pistol pistol. This is up here in the San Francisco Bay Area though.

Shooting a shotgun in competition is all about reloading quickly, so if you are not interested in doing that, then well, you have limited yourself to a very small selection. There are several clubs that run 3 gun matches, and a couple that run 2 gun. You first need to know how to shoot a competition, so start with a local action pistol match. Might be able to help if we know your location.

Our USPSA Thanksgiving Multigun match at Sac Valley, was pistol, rifle this year. No shotgun. 1st time in my 10 years of shooting it. Once a year we have a 2 gun shoot, but with no pistol. Most all multigunners I know, like shotgun. Everyone shoots pistol.

I've heard that there is a national 2-gun league developing and being spearheaded by a few USPSA shooters. Expect an announcement sometime around March 2013. I've asked around at some local club levels but it's very difficult because the match schedule is absolutely packed here. Just from my unofficial polling, there is a lot of interest in it, especially from those who are ex-military or train regularly who want to get additional practice with their AR and pistol.
Of course, this could all be for naught should we see another AWB!

OP, it is hard to recommend a group of people or a range for your 2 gun shooting, if you don't list the area that you are willing to travel to.

I have shot a local match that has pistol and shotgun stages (may be shot with pistol only if you like) for the main match and a rifle section after the main match. The time I shot with them, they mixed rifle in with the other stuff (supposedly an unusual setup for them).

I shot an action pistol match at the same range that allowed shotguns for one or more stages, but didn't use rifles.

The local matches that I have shot are pretty flexible, if you just want to shoot for fun. The multi gun match director said I could shoot with a 10/22 rather than a 223 if I wanted, but it just wouldn't count for score against other shooters.

It sounds like you are looking for local matches that are flexible with equipment usage. All of the shotgun targets I have seen, can also be shot with a pistol. The Steel madness pistol match that I shoot allows shotgun use, and pistol caliber rifles, but is scored only for pistol. People like to practice their shotgun shooting.

I don't have an ideal shotgun for these matches, but I have tried it and still had fun. I shoot a Benelli Super Sport that only holds 4+1 rounds and has a 28"-30" barrel. It is a semi auto and will knock down targets as fast as I can pull the trigger, but the length can slow me down, and the reloads effect me the most. No one at the range bagged on my gun. Many had good compliments. I figure if I can run a sporting clays shotgun, then it should be even easier to use a shorter gun with a bigger magazine, later on.

Check out some matches and talk to the directors. You can shoot a competition without actually wanting to compete with others. I don't know of any other great ways to practice shooting rifle and pistol together. Competitions have the resources to setup great courses of fire. I don't personally have 90-200 targets of my own to setup the same scenarios, and I don't have the range space.

Thanks for all the reply's. A lot of good info passed. I am a member of Sac Valley Shooting Club. I will have to look into one of there shoots. As to clarify I don't enjoy shooting shotguns and the limited ammo available makes them less than optimal combat weapons IMO. I do realize though there are some very talented individuals who can make it work well. I hope maybe to see you guys at the range one day.

Handguns are very limited weapons, much more so than shotguns. Maybe you should go to a rifle match. LOL

I sued to dread the shotgun stages... till I leanred how to use the thing. Now I use the shotgun to make ground on other shooters. My shotgun is only limited by the rules and the.

Once in a 40rd shotgun stage at alameda we were required to use bird on close movers, buck on close and medium range hostage targets and slugs out to 100yds.

Learn your shotgun. Love your shotgun. It should become your "cold, dead, hands" gun.
