AAR: Falcon Operations Group - Carbine Skill Builder

    June 16, 2012
    Prado Shooting Park

There were about 7 students for the FOG Carbine Skill Builder Course. Instructors were Voodoo and Hollywood. The last time I took a carbine course with Falcon was back in July of 2011 so this skill builder was needed to get my shooting skills back on track.

After a safety brief, we topped off our magazines, put our gear on, and zeroed our rifles. Because this was a skill builder course and not a 1.0 rifle class, there was no lecture on AR15 nomenclature or fundamentals of shooting one. Voodoo and Hollywood did show us some different shooting positions that are more dynamic and some were new to me. One thing they said was to be aggressive in your stance so that you can quickly move or get out of the "X" if needed. We did the following for the next 4 hours:
    • DEA dot drills
    • Failure drills
    • NSR drills
    • Speed reloads
    • Tactical reloads
    • Standing, kneeling, prone shooting
    • Hollywood showed us different shooting positions while sitting down from 50 yards.
    • Shooting and running from 50 yards to 25 yards, to 15, and 7 yards.
    • Shooting and moving forwards and backwards
    • Serpentine Drill

I know this is a short AAR but again, it's a skill builder course and only about 4 hours long. I felt we did a lot of shooting and weapons manipulations in that given time period. This is not a beginners course and the pace was moderate to high. Being in shape and physically fit is very important because some drills require running and moving your body from standing to prone position and from prone to kneeling to standing. I heard that some students even got sore the next day. No rifles that I know of failed that day or any gear for that matter.

How do they handle those who bring BB AR's??? Mag changes and round limits seem that they would slow down the training....

^ The above is such a myth, it needs to be busted by the Mythbusters.

Mag changes take about .5 seconds longer than normal. So at the end of the day after 200 mag changes you will be getting out of class a whole 1.67 minutes later.

1911 users with 8 round mags in pistol classes do not slow the class down what so ever. As far as round count in the magazine goes its not a factor.

GM, perhaps I stated my question improperly...I meant to ask how they teach to accomodate using a tool to change mags rather than the way the ar was designed?

Thank you for you temporal accounting
