    Getting into 3 gun

I've been wanting to get into 3 gun comps. I shoot pistol and rifles pretty regularly, about 1-2 times per week. I've got 4 1911's but I'm assuming the capacity restriction would be a problem for those. So I've got an M&P 9 I can use, and an AR-15 in 223. I'm just missing a shotgun. What do you guys recommend just starting out, and will the m&p suffice or should I spring for a glock? Thanks

The only issue with the M&P is the lack of high capacity magazines in CA, since it was manufactured after 2000. That's the reason why you see so many Glocks out there. Have you started shooting IDPA/USPSA yet? If not, you should so you can learn the safety protocols, range commands and rules of the game. Have fun!

That's a good idea. They do have local pistol matches. They are at the same range so I definitely will look into those first. As far as a glock, is the 34 the preferred one for the pistol comps?

Yes, you'll find a lot of G34s (I shoot one) since it's affordable, accurate enough, customizable and you can use high caps with it (up to 22 rounds of 9mm with an extension). Having said that, I shoot my G17 as well and find little difference in performance so go with what you shoot the best.

Also was wondering if there is a competition exemption to bullet buttons for AR's?

No competition exemption for BB so your best bet is featureless. You can still use your BB rifle. It just won't be competitive, if that's your ultimate goal.

Skyscraper, if you want to save yourself a lot of time, money, and your marriage/relationship, please do not get into 3 gun. There are many other shooting sports that are less expensive, or other hobbies. LOL! Your best bet is to go to some local matches and see what others are using and most all 3 gunners will let you try out their gear. For shotguns, the M2 Benelli, Mossberg 930 JM, Remington Versa Max tactical,
FN SLP, which all need some modifications for 3 gun, are the ones that are most popular and we all have varied opinions on all of them.
Best source for information on 3 gun is the Brians Enos forums. It is the site for competition shooting information. Good luck.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

Thanks guys. A local FFL bud of mine competes and is semi-pro. He is the reason Im getting into it because he peaked my interest.

Is it safe to assume all 3 gun shooters in california use an AR for the rifle competition that is Featureless?

No, some have been shooting a long time so there are also RAWs (Registered Assault Weapons) and you also have MIL and LEO exemptions.

Pala runs a CA rifle division.

I don't know that he gets paid. But he's on the 3 gun nation website and the article describes him as semi pro. I believe it's page 4 right now on the home page.
