Whatever you are calling position 3 in the four step draw...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's Tale -
Dictated competitve ready positions aside, SUL or 3rd eye (aka position 4 of the 5 step draw) for real life/tactical environments is where I find myself.
Arguements can be made pro and con for each. One needs to be ab le to respond from any and all "Ready Positions". Otherwise, you ain't ready at all are ya?Larry Renner

OP you get the award for troll of the week. this is a worthless thread. sorry.
congratulations.
as to the op's question, I feel most comfortable with SUL or 3rd eye as Mossbergman calls it. Sul feels right to me because I am not really muzzling anything but the ground and from this position I can quickly get onto target. It feels safer to me.Comment

On the range training - low ready and/or compressed ready depending on how tired I am. On the field in building searches - SUL or close contact compressed ready.
On the field doing felony stops - low ready. On the field in fixed position - (depending on the position) SUL, low ready, compressed ready or even down by the leg (not good). Probably the Low Ready is the most common - not my favorite.Last edited by Hanzo; 07-20-2012, 2:35 PM.Comment

I generally start in the compressed ready and then smoothly flow into low or high ready depending on the situation (area search, yard search, building search, high risk stops, dealing with suspects, etc). All of these situations have their own variations that will dictate the position.NRA Patron MemberComment

Depends ...
For general range work or in classes when standing somewhat stationary, I prefer the muzzle-up position taught by Tactical Response.
For movement from point A to point B, I prefer the "count 2" position favored by the late Paul Gomez.|

SUL and High Ready.
But if I had to run I would choose High Ready. If I was stationary I would choose SUL.sigpic

Without any doubt my handgun pointed at a target is the position I use the most. Otherwise it is moving back to the holster or coming from it.
So my ready position is "Ready to blast" position.
I have no idea why create a poll for this.
I would think the majority of us who shoot spend more time actually pointed in and shooting then much else.............. Or is this a trick question?
Ram you train quite a bit, why even ask this question? It seems like who cares what position everyone else uses. Is the feedback from this going to change what you have learned?........... And if you have a deeper reason for it, why not state it at the beginning..
I may be with Bobby on this... I guess I am sharing Bobbys your own version of worthlessness..Comment

Makes a lot of sense. You really only have to worry about what everyone else is doing if your are on a line or in a stack together, or am I missing something?
There are many "good" ready positions. Pick one.
As for the poll: idle curiosity seems as good a reason as any, and I am not certain a better reason is required, lol.|

I guess I meant primary ready position. Different schools of thought on this. SEALs are adamant on High Ready. Most LE Low Ready. I just wanted to see a gathering of viewpoints. I understand one size does not fit all and circumstances dictate. A better poll would have scenarios asking individuals which ready position they would use for each situation. So, as such this particular poll is somewhat worthless since it has inherent limitations although it does give some insights. Your mileage may vary...Their drills are bloodless battles, and their battles bloody drills.

Funny thing is, with the exceptions of "Low Ready and SUL" the other positions of readiness are vague. for instance, High Ready...is that looking over the gun at shoulder level or looking through the sights at a target area as you move or the Full Sabrina (muzzle up next to your head/face)? I've seen and heard all three explainations for high ready.
I'd imagine most any time the gun is in your hand you'd be "readier" than if it was still in the holster.
I think it was a good poll. Lots of opinions and concepts have been shared.Larry Renner

The high ready we use is weapon tucked in but not as much compressed ready, muzzle up 45 degrees and the front sight in line with the tip of your nose (front sight visible). Any higher and you start obstructing your scanning arc.
About a month or so ago we did a test of 4 different static ready positions: high, low, compressed and SUL. We started at the 7 yard line by looking away from a target 10 yards to the right. Well it turned the time to first shot and accuracy were pretty much the same even for SUL!Their drills are bloodless battles, and their battles bloody drills.
