    1st time 3-gunner questions....

Im gearing up for the 3-gun winter classic at 5 dogs. Ive got a pistol rig set, a 8-shot pump shotgun with side and stock shell holders, and a few rifles to choose from, but I dont know which would be best.

What I need to know is how much ammo should I bring for the shotgun and rifle, and about how much would I go through on a typical course.

Normally, the guys at WEGC in my neck of the woods tell me "Bring 150 rounds for your pistol, 100 rounds for your rifle, 50 shot shells and a box of slugs for the shotgun to round out your day." Hope this helps!

I asked the same question last year. The answer I received from Wade was:
Here is the estimated round count for the Winter Classic 3G.

        pistol 102
        rifle 109
        shotgun 105
        shot 88
        slugs 17

Long range rifle may be out to 400 yards.

Warm up at X3 Multi Gun in Piru, next Sunday, January 20th.

Go to http://www.X3multigun.com, register as a website user and you can view the stages and get the round count. What we do at X3 is very similar to Winter Classic.

I always bring double what they list as the round count. Maybe 3x for rifle is there's lots of long range steel. Fortunately you can bring back any extra and it doesn't go bad.

websites lookin good jack, can't wait till Sunday.

+1 on the double the round count thing. What if you have a bad stage that you overshoot or you have to reshoot. Always bring extra. If you can make come down to the X3 match, boatload of fun and great (and very helpful) people.

                Thanks for the replies.

Looks like Ill be using a 1911 .45, a pump shotgun, and an SKS. Now I just need to figure out how to carry shells and stripper clips.

Also, does 7.62x39mm qualify for heavy metal class?

7.62x39 doesn't qualify for HM class. And check your bullets to see if a magnet sticks to them. If it does... ask the match director if you can use them (probably not).

The minimum for this match is 7.62x51 (Nato)/.308Win. for HM div.

Just bring whatever you've got and have a good time. Don't I repeat don't bring steel core ammo. Bring lots of mags you'll need 5 for your 10 round pistol and 4 or 5 or a bunch of stripper clips for your rifle, expect to carry at least 16 extra rounds of shotgun and 24 would be a better idea. Carry them in a dump pouch or something. Don't buy anything just run what ya brung and have fun.

It's all day it's fun and it's hard work (well it is if you are old and a porker)

It's nice to see some regular 3 gun faces here.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I think we need our own class. Maybe we can use a Hybrid car as the box into which you must not be able to fit.

                          shotshell pouch

here is a link for the shotshell pouches in case you want to try them. I used them last weekend for the first time as I'm 2 matches ahead of you and they worked great for me. Also, I bought some of the 12ga snap caps to practice with loading the shotgun. Seems the shotgun reloading is where you can really make or break the timer.

                          Godspeed to my HCS brothers.

he actually shoehorns into a pretty small car, but I think the test should be an Original Mini. It is a lot of work, but a crapload of fun as well. It's nice to have an alternative for rifles other than bang, wait, bang, wait, or taking a class.
