    Shotgun Loading Challenge

The idea behind this challenge is to set some sort of standardized test for evaluating the many shotguns, shell holders and loading techniques available

There are lots of videos on-line showing different types of loads and carriers. The one thing we lack for an objective comparison of the options is a standard to compare them.

This is my attempt at establishing that standard. I'd love to see the various options put to the test in this format.

So get out of the basement and get to the range!

Let's see the videos and someone please get under 9 seconds!

Remember, if it is not on tape it did not happen. So please refrain from the "I know this guys who shot it is 5 second stories."

This is intended as something fun we can do to test gear and not as something to cause problems. If you don't like it, Don't participate

    Thanks!

Great vid Keith...... Saw it earlier this morning on Facebook...!!!!

If you can, run another vid the same way, but next time post your 1st shot and splits too...... Your shot's off the buzzer and after each reload is smoke'n. I personally would like to challenge each component of the run just for comparison !!!!!

I saw this earlier thismorning on Facebook as well. No wonder you're winning so much. Those loads and even the splits just seem insanely fast.

I'll definitly be trying this and I'll post what I can do. This is great. I really like the way you aproach the video/challenge. Anyone can say what they can do in their garage reload time, but actually doing it with live rounds can be another animal, add more than one shot and the length of the drill seem like they'd challenge your focus and intensity as well. I think we need more standard drills like this for multigun. Not a classification system by any means, no one wants to shoot those at matches, but having or in this case creating a standard unit of measure for each gun is really cool.

Right on Keith, get out of the basement/garage/computer world, and run the gun with live ammo at a known target size and distance under the clock. And post up the video! So the challenge is low 9's, I accept, will try it at the end of the month.

For everyone else, who does not shoot 3 Gun, Keith is one of the best on the planet.

Excellent video. Great challenge. Loading 4 rounds at or under 3 seconds...outstanding, great splits.

The start of something big, I like it!
BTW, something we found out about the Remington VersaMax. Not only does it shoot very flat but the loading port is huge, compared to my FN SLP Mk1. So, it is easier to load and shoot. I did have to bend the barrel for it to shoot slugs straight though.

You set the bar pretty high Keith but I'll give it a try. Looks like fun and I need the shotgun practice.

Honestly I'd like to see a drill that loads 8 at one time. I'd really like to see what the load 2 and load 4 people can do. Given that they have to dismount I don't think they are competitive with this drill.

Keith has this video which shows starting with two rounds in tube, shoot one, load eight and then shoot one...

This challenge is harder than you make it look Keith

I finally got to the range to try it today and on Monday. My first attempts were terrible. I wanted to do well and whenever I try to do well when loading the shotgun I tense up and things don't go smoothly.

On Monday 5/21/2012 these were my times
                        Attempt# - Total - First Shot - load 4 - Split - Load 4 - Split - Load 4
#1 - 14.53 - 0.78-4.02-0.34-4.45-0.34-4.13 - 0.47 - One extra shot at the end, missed the plate the first time haha
                        #2 - 14.89 - 1.01-4.23-0.39-4.02-0.33-4.91
                        #3 - 14.52 - 0.96-4.48-0.32-4.66-0.27-3.83
                        #4 - 15.86 - 0.82-3.65-0.28-4.16-0.28-6.67 - fumbled last load

And then I ran out of shells. I noticed this drill seems to eat through the shells pretty quick, but then again, so do a lot of drills. I havn't really done much but dryfire with the shotgun for a long time, outside of matches that is.

Today 5/23/2012 I again didn't bring enough ammo. I worked this drill into a longer drill. I started with the rifle, shot 4 targets, ran around a corner, ditched the rifle, picked up the shotgun and shot the drill. I timed it, but the first shot time wouldn't be accurate since it involved ditching the rifle too. So If you assume an average of 0.89 second first shot, that'd give:

                        #1 - 0.89-4.43-0.27-4.65-0.28-4.53 ~ 15.05s
                        #2 - 0.89-3.71-0.31-3.66-0.28-4.77 ~ 13.62s
                        #3 - 0.89-4.02-0.40-4.04-0.26-4.51 ~ 14.12s
                        #4 - 0.89-5.33-0.21-3.70-0.20-3.96 ~ 14.29s
                        #5 - 0.89-4.25-0.24-4.19-0.21-5.27 ~ 15.05s

Then I ran it one more time, just the load 12 drill
                        #6 - 11.55-0.98-3.41-0.22-3.34-0.22-3.38
Everything just seemed super smooth. I was in the zone, had no more rounds left and was almost doing the run for fun, but with concentration I didn't seem to have on the previous runs. I'm looking forward to trying this again and trying to match and beat that time now. I kind of set a goal these first few times, that 12 seconds was achievable, and there you go. My next goal will have to be sub 11 or even consistent 12s

Thanks for the feedback, nice shooting, remember I've been doing this drill for awhile.

Thanks, I had to remind myself of that the other day. You said you've been doing it for about a year and start your practice session with it, and do it until you get a run under 10s... something like that. That's definitely a lot of practice at it

I had a chance to try it a few more times the other day. I had some aweful times, fumbled loads, missed plates I think I was trying too hard to have a good run. I realized that I need to just slow down and let it all happen, be smooth and methodical and it'll fall together. My best run of the day was

                            12.82 - 1.02 - 3.88 - 0.27 - 3.78 - 0.26 - 3.61

I'm pretty much considering any run I can keep my loads in the 3s a good run, the lower the better obviously.
