Looking for a mentor for a new shooter in the OC

I just had someone ask me how to get into 3 position rifle, 3PAR or air pistol competitions. This person wants to jump in with both feet and take it seriously but doesn't know where to start. If anyone has any info, suggestions or is willing to mentor a new shooter, please let me know. So far I've suggested contacting MAC 1 but that's it. I have zero contacts/ideas for 3 position rimfire.

LAR&R in El Monte holds 3 Position smallbore shooting. It is a great club. I shot there regularly. http://www.larrclub.org/

My suggestion would be attend some matches. See what gear people are using and ask questions. Either about the gear they're using, what they may recommend for a newbie, and any training/practice tips. All this after reading that event's rulebook to have a basic understanding. Most "competitors" are very friendly and willing to help newcomers get sorted. (I use quotes because unless it's a national event most attendees go as a hobby.)

Gun Kraft brings up a good point. In my years of competing, I noticed many competitors have extras and I have seen a visitor get outfitted with the extras that competitors brought to the match. Matches are also a good place to acquire used equipment to get started. Most importantly, competitors are always willing to help and guide newcomers.

This is very good advice. Pay attention to what the top shooters are using. If you don't, you can waste a lot of time and money. Ask me how I know this.
