Is it possible to get a basic precision rifle course (one day, hopefully less than $300) in Nor Cal preferably near the Bay Area? Bonus points for being able to use a decent budget centerfire bolt action rifle with a decent budget mildot scope and shoot out to 400 yards, maybe 600.

Are these classes just for the rich shooters with the best equipment?

Almost any M16/M4 variant can shoot out to 500m w/ iron sights alone. no need for any fancy equipment. Headshots at 500m are not that hard w/ proper technique.

the problem is finding a 500m range, and targets.

Having been to a fair share of precision rifle/sniper schools, I can say you do not need a $5000 custom rig. The equipment list for just about all of them has specified something along the lines of 'A rifle and ammunition combination capable of 1 MOA or better.' There's also usually a comment about 'quick adjustments on the scope' (not dials with coin slots). You can easily meet this standard with an off-the-shelf .308 Remington 700 SPS (~$600) or PSS(~$900) and match ammo from Federal or Black Hills. The guys at the California Precision Rifle Club have put together some example packages at various price points starting around $1000 that would meet the requirements of the courses you are talking about (check their rifle forum).

Not sure how many 1-day classes you are going to find in the Bay Area (or anywhere). Most precision rifle courses I know about are 2-days or longer. Your price point is right on, $200-300/day seems to be the going rate. You may look into the Northern California Practical Precision Rifle Club, They hold long range clinics, practice sessions and matches at the Sac Valley Shooting Ranges. The clinics are probably less than $100 for the day. They are very helpful group by all accounts.

The NCPRC clinic is fantastic but by no means an actual class.

I dont know Sac Valley's range rental policy but if you could get 6-10 people I bet The Grey Group could work something out.
