M1A for 3-gun?

Other than the heavy weight of a M1A for 3-gun (empty at 9lbs) and the other things I list below, what else are the bad points?

1. CA muzzle brake is bigger than the 1"x3" rule for tactical division[?]
2. good mags are hard to come by unless they are USGI
3. .308 is more expensive to shoot vs. .223
4. recoil is heavy vs. a .223 rifle
5. double taps are hard to execute?

Pros:

1. 308 is scored as major

If you shoot a 12 gauge pump and a 44 cal or larger pistol you can shoot all the major 3 gun matches in heavy metal division with the M1A.

Oh yes, you're right about the M1a in Heavy Metal Division. But I read on the BE.com forum that the CA muzzle brake puts the M1A in Open (even if the rifle has a single optic only) because it is larger than the 1"x3" muzzle brake limit in dimensions. Is that true? So if a competitor was to put a single optic on his M1A, he'll have to install a shorter and skinnier muzzle brake like the one from Smith Enterprise?

I shoot my Scout model in three gun. Nobody has ever given me any flack about the standard SA Brake. Its only slightly longer than the standard that the standard; a couple minutes with a file would be all it would take to bring it under. But that wouldent change its functioning so I think its a case of no-harm-no-foul. Its pretty hard to call somebody shooting a non competetive rifle a gamer cause of a brake that's a fraction too long. Particularly when you consider that if he changed to a smith brake which would be legal he would be gettin more muzzle control.

I used to use a FAL para on an informal 3 gun.

The 308 is nice when we were engaging a scuba tank out to 200 yards. That 308 hit with real authority as the 223/556 was a little "lacking".
