when is the latest I can pay for the background check? and is it to my advantage to pay for it after Jan. 1st? thank you

Generally I pay for it prior to attending a class. Either the last one is still good or a new one is needed. If you don't go to FS for several years, you don't need current background checks during that time.

Unfortunately I can't remember if they are ran on a calender year or a year from last time it was done. You probably have to contact FS for the details.

If you need the background check, it will appear in your cart when you check out.

It's a year from the last time you had a background check performed. Or rather, you must have a BC on file that is less than one year old at the time you attend the course. So, it won't make a difference before or after the 1st other than it'll give about a week longer of being valid over the next year.

If I recall correctly (unless they have changed in the last couple years) FS goes by calendar year, not 12months from when you paid for it.

so it is to your advantage to do it after the first of the year.

Only pay for it when you take your first class for a given calendar year.

Do kids have to do a background check as well?

No. IIRC there is a parent authorization form in its stead.

Are background checks needed for empty hand, martial arts, self-defense classes, too? Or, only classes involving firearms. I have to think only for firearm classes.

My understanding is that we need a "background check within the last year," so that would suggest that if you took a class in June of 2012 you should be OK for a class in May of 2013.

I believe background checks are based on a calendar year. My understanding is you will need another background check.
