    Ruger rimfire challenge

Just saw an episode in Morro Bay. Ruger steel challenge looked awesome and a great way to start shoot competion. Does anyone know how much it was to enter? Was it advertised here? Damn I wish I knew about it. Next year I will go. I have two rugers one with a tac-sol barrel on it with 1.5x5 leupold on it really lite weight, I put the scope on it to give it some weight. The other ruger has a 18" Kidd barrel with a aimpoint micro on it because with the barrel is enough weight. Which one or setup would you guys suggest. If you have pics. Please show them.

You are not that far. You might like to come and visit one of our Ruger Rimfire Matches. www.nvsa.info

Put the aimpoint on the Tac-sol and you have the right setup. With speed steel you need to be able to accelerate the barrel through the air and be able to stop it just as fast. Light-weight is your friend. Heavy bull barrels never make it to the second match. You dont need the accuracy that a bull barrel delivers. Not too many shots over 50yds. After you have your rifle transitioning fast you need to then realize all you really needed is a rifle that runs 100% of the time. 50% of the shooters will experience reliability issues. Even at a major match, (just look at last year National results) where the top 60% had good numbers and the bottom 40% looked like they were on vacation. Reliability trumps all other when it comes to Ruger Rimfire. I do not remember the cost of last years match. I plan on going this year myself(assuming they have one). I also plan on attending the Nationals in New Mexico this year. Our Rimfire matches run each 4th Sunday (excluding Dec.25th 2011).

Let me know what other questions you have.

      Rimfire

Thanks, I will do just that. I just ordered a picatiny rain for my rig. Can I just shoot rifles or at the matches is it both handgun and rifle or nothing? Do they measure your trigger pull? Are the matches all one day or multi days? So I know to get a motel room. Do you have a calander telling the dates and places where the events are. Thanks for your time in responding.

Our monthly matches run from 8:30am till about 2-3pm. Usually 2-3 stages (times 2 guns) with each being shot with pistol and rifle. Most Ruger Rimfire stages are shot with pistol and rifle. You will need both. There are usually loaner pistol and rifles avalible at our local club matches. Trigger pull is not measured. Firearms need to function properly and be safe. Gridley to Richmond Ca. is about 1 hour 30 min. So depending on how far you are from Richmond will tell you how far to our range. No motel nessessary.

Is this different than the Richmond Rimfire matches? I just did theirs last week but they had maybe 8 or 9 stages. Just trying to understand how much shooting there is at Gridley.

I'm not "Bombmaster", but I'm the current Match Director at NVSA and will be the President (again) in 2012.

I'm not sure how they do it in Richmond as I haven't been able to make their match, as it has fallen on the same day as ours.

We have 2 or 3 stages (planning for 3 moving foward) each stage has a Pistol version and a Rifle version. Usually the rifle version has an extra plate added at a longer range or a different shooting box further back. We have done them both ways. In the stages I have designed the Pistol stages have had 5 plates and the Rifle have had 6. You shoot each stage (version) Five (5) times, with your slowest time thrown out and the other 4 totaled for your score, think Steel Challenge.

So with 3 stages each with a Pistol and Rifle version of each, 5 shots/plates for pistol and 6 shots/plates for rifle. So assuming you don't need to take any extra shots (good luck, lol) you would fire 165 rounds.

One other comment, Bombmaster is right on with the lightweight comments. I shot our first one with a stainless bull-barrel, the next match my rifle had a Tac-Sol barrel.

Richmond looks similar to our match. Looks as though they have more movement. They look like they sometimes use both pistol and rifle in the same COF, in a single string. They look to only run 3 strings on certain stages. On other stages it is only one string of fire. We are currently running each of our 3 stages twice, once with a pistol and once with a rifle. Each firearm (pistol and rifle) will shoot each stage 5 times (5 strings). We then take the 4 best strings and add them up for a stage time. In all actuality you will make 30 runs for time. Your 24 best runs will be your total score on the day. Richmond looks as though they may run unique stages for the pistol and the rifle.

I hope someone from Richmond can chime in and let us know their format.

Ruger Rimfire Rules basically says. If it is safe go for it! Their rulebook consists of only a couple of pages. There is not yet a classification system in place. I hear one is in the works. So each club will currently have their own flavor of the sport. As more rules creep in all clubs will start to look the same. For now we can do most anything we want.

Grab that old 22 rifle and pistol come out and have fun on the cheap.

                      22rifle

Your rigs look nice! What material are your comps made out of heavier metal than alloy or SS for the extra weight for better swing.

The comps are made of Aluminum. I wouldn't want the extra weight of anything heavier for this game.

                          Hello 1911man.

My name is Juan and I was the prize coordinator for the first two Ruger Rimfire. I am not actively involved in the match any more (range politics suck) but I will try to answer some of your questions. I did not read all of the above posts, so if I am repetitive please forgive me.

The Ruger match is a 2 gun match. You need a .22 rifle and pistol. You can shoot iron sights on both guns or add a dot to one or both guns. If either of the two guns have an optic then you will be in open class. As I said earlier, I have not been involved in the match in a couple of years, but I do know that the stages are usually incredibly fun and challenging. It is really eye opening watching some of the really fast open guys. The current match director is named Nelson and his website is http://www.teamrimfire.com/

SLOSA also hosts a monthly .22 match called Central Coast Rimfire and it is ran by a gentleman named Eric

This match is also a lot of fun. The stages are less elaborate then the annual RRC. The stages basically follow the Steel Challenge format. Typically 5 pistol steel targets and 6 rifle steel. The stages are shot from a shooting box so the shooters are static. This makes it a great venue for new shooters as well as younger shooters. Eric also has a couple of more experienced shooters available to "instruct" new shooters for free. This is a fabulous idea and I hope it gets incorporated into more local level matches.

As far as guns go, the above poster is absolutely correct. You should simply swap your optics around and through the heavy barreled gun back in the safe. The name of the gam is shooting steel quickly with a .22 is lightness. The lighter the gun the quicker you can transition on targets.

Hope this all helps. If you have any questions please PM me and I will be happy to attempt to answer them for you.
