    Odd (?) High Power question

I'm thinking about getting into high power, because I'm crap with a rifle and want to get better... I have a question about the sitting posture they use.

I can't sit cross-legged. Don't know why, never have been able to. I was playing with different sitting positions tonight and trying to figure out how I could manage it (don't ask, I don't know what the issue is), and found one, BUT... It's rather close to kneeling. I'm sitting on my right foot, with my right leg bent at the knee and my shin against the ground. Is that kosher for their sitting stage, or is that "kneeling"?

The kneeling position you describe is the typical kneeling method (without a kneeling roll).

The 200 yard rapid fire stage is actually sitting from standing OR kneeling from standing. So yes, you could use that kneeling position in 200 yard rapid fire. But I have never seen anyone use kneeling. Kneeling just isn't stable enough.

If you can't shoot cross legged, try cross ankle or even open leg. Cross ankle or cross legged are the two that are the best. Open leg is used if you just can't bend over for either cross ankle or cross legged.

I didn't look very well, but here's a quick and dirty page I found via Google that has some pictures of the cross legged, cross ankle, and open leg positions:

I'll try 'em again, but I was just messing with those positions and couldn't really hold a rifle steady. I'm pretty dead-steady from my kneel, though. I'm actually MORE steady in my sit-on-foot kneel than I am prone... by a long way.

There's an article written by David Tubb regarding his own sitting position:

It's a semi-cross legged/ankle and he actually rests the back of his arms infront of his knee. It's an interesting position. I've never tried it before.

This may sound silly, but if you wear a belt, especially a wide one, take it off. If you have a large gut, undo the top button on your pants.

          I am NOT joking.

We were told that at the high-power clinic I went to last weekend, even though it was covering the off-hand position.

I don't have much of a gut, but with my back acting up again, there's no way I'll be able to sit. Kneeling it is.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll be figuring out a way to work with kneeling at the shoot-n-q.

True how true, also play with how tight your jacket is . That helped a little with my back

For those who have back issues (I'm one), often it's not the position itself that's a problem, it's getting into the position. Once there I'm fine. It just takes most of the 3 minute prep period at a HP match. Getting back up sucks also.

If you have that problem and are shooting a HP match, just let the RO running the line that you will be staying in the sitting position when the command to stand is given. It's not all that uncommon. You just can't be the first one to pop a round down range when the targets come up.

                    Ocabj-
I tried Tubb's sitting position just now in my living room... jeez, that's the most stable sitting position I've ever tried. Very comfortable and natural.
