    CMP qualifying matches

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum, so my question may not make a lot of sense.
I did some searching, but still can't quite "connect the dots".

I would like to join CMP and participate in HighPower rifle matches.

At the same time, one of my acquaintances is highly recommending Springfield M1A National Match rifle, since probably someone he knows is trying to sell one.

1). My first question is, what competition/class can I participate with M1A NM rifle using only the iron sights?

2). What is considered CMP qualifying match?
I usually go to Chabot and it looks like every 4th Saturday of the month the hold a High Power competition.

I really like the idea of M14 pattern rifles and I like .308, since I already have .308 hunting rifle. There is a certain thrill to shooting long range 100+ yds with iron sights.

Before I jump and get this M1A NM rifle, could someone shed some light on the "CMP qualifying matches" and if I can participate in them using M1A rifle?

    Thank you!

The CMP only has one class, Service Rifle, and the M1A is eligible to shoot in that. So you would be ok to shoot the High Power matches at Chabot, or the NRA High Power matches out at Sac Valley.

I do not know if Chabot is a CMP affiliated club. But send a PM to NRAhighpowershooter http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/member.php?u=5593

He's the match director for the Chabot HP matches and he will be able to tell you if they are a CMP club.

Generally speaking, any NRA High Power or CMP match will qualify as qualifying match for proof of shooting.

        Zouaves

If south San Jose isn't too far, the San Jose Zouaves shoot the 1st Saturday of the month at Metcalf/Santa Clara County Field Sports. We are a CMP affiliated club, and our training and practice match are specifically designed to get you qualified for the CMP.

Hope to see you next Saturday.

Also, you may be interested in shooting with us at Carmel Gun Club. We use the Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club range in Gonzales. Probably a fair drive for you, but you can shoot at 200 and 300 yards with pit targets.

Edit: Thought of something else, since you evidently don't have a rifle yet... If you can get a good deal on an M1A through your friend, and you already have the loading stuff for it, then that's great. I shot an M1A at matches for years, and can confirm that it is a wonderful rifle. That said, though, you undoubtedly will find that most high power shooters shoot AR15 rifles, and for good reason. They are better in every way (except maybe "personality"). I recently switched over to the black rifle and my scores immediately went up 20 points.

As previously posted, yes you can. But, as also previously posted, you will be at a HUGE disadvantage score-wise. And AR's are cheaper to feed, need little maintenance, are relatively inexpensive, etc...
