I'm thinking about trying IPSC or IDPA. My question is if you're allowed time to field brass in between shooter?. I don't mean to be stingy but ammo's not cheap.

Yes you are, but will add the caveat that sometimes (not often) club rules say no...but that's really rare and usually a time issue. If they likely say you can't during the match, you can afterwards.

Yeah, but like >95% don't have an issue with it so long as the stage duties (taping targets, resetting steel and props, etc.) are getting done.

For local matches generally picking up brass is ok and sometimes it is required. There is a right and a wrong way to do it. If all you do is pick up brass including the brass of other competitior which you keep while not resetting a single target you will not be popular with your squad. The exception is a match where picking up all your brass is required (pala for example). then you can be one of the designated brass pickers but you should ask or offer squadmates their brass back. If they don't want it you can keep it.

At major matches it is often "lost brass" in order to speed the process up and stay on schedule

LOL I have a wheel gun, but I think it barely passes muster for minor from what I've read in the rule books. The other wheel gun would work better for ccowboy black powder shoots.

I guess it would help to be more specific about my location... Anyway I'm closest to Richmond or Chabot, so I guess it would be best to ask those two ranges what the policy is. 12 hr night shift turns my brain into mush on Tues.

If you see someone good with a wheelgun you realize it's not a handicap at all....Don't worry about brass just go shoot a few matches.

I was at a 3-gun match a few months ago and one shooter chose to pick up brass instead of helping to reset. Then the last stage, he shot first and took off to go pick up brass on another stage. I will never squad with a POS like that again.

Like others stated, if you do it respectfully and help out re-setting, it shouldn't be a problem.
