I'm wanting to get into competition shooting and I, at this time, only have an AR. What competitions are there that allow ARs?

Competitions that allow ARs

It depends on what kind of shooting you want to do. There is the stand at shoot at a bullseye NRA type shooting, and then there is action type shooting.. though those matches generally require multi guns (Rifle/pistol/shotgun). There is a since action match in the state (Bay area Rifle Championship) but it is currently sold out and only happens once a year. You may want to inquire to the NRA or your local range about what kind of competition they have where you can get a start. -
You have you AR-15, now just go get a shotgun and handgun for 3-Gun. There is USPSA MultiGun, outlaw 3 gun, and IDPA multigun.Comment

i would suggest using your AR-15 for a local NRA High Power Match. the catch is, you have to use iron sights only for this type of bullseye competition...no optics. and you need a good spotting scope to make sure you know what you are hitting. as an added bonus, you'll learn how to pull targets in the pits...good fun!
i'm in the bay area right now, and there are some clubs that do this. Richmond Rod and Gun Club has matches the first and third weekend of the month. And Chabot Gun Club has them on the fourth weekend of the month. all matches start around 830 am and end around 12-1pm ish.
"sir...does this mean ann margaret's not coming?"Comment

First of all, where are you located?
If you want to run and gun with your AR, you just missed last month's all rifle match at West End Gun Club.
Your best bet is 3 gun competition.Comment

I'm in SoCal. My AR isn't built as a precision rifle and I don't have a magnifying optic so anything past 100yds I don't think is possible with my rifle. 3 gun sounds interesting but I don't have a pistol or shotgun. Are there limitations on the pistol and shotguns that can be used?Comment

Shoot Smallbore? Check out LAR&R in S. El Monte
For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security.

Make sure you read AR15Barrels sticky thread in this forum titled 'What you need to get started shooting tactical type matches'. It will answer most of your questions.I'm in SoCal. Thanks. I read the thread and it didn't quite answer my weapon limitation question. though I suppose that I will visit the match sites and try to find the info there. I would ideally like to compete in some tactical scenarios (I don't know how else to describe it) I will eventually want to compete in accuracy matches but not with my AR. I will choose a different platform for that.Comment

Then 3-gun is for you! Regarding equipment, Kelly Neal's blog does an excellent job describing what is needed and allowed.Thanks. There are guys in the Limited division (Iron sight or 1x optic) who can shoot out to 400-500 yards no problem.I'm in SoCal. My AR isn't built as a precision rifle and I don't have a magnifying optic so anything past 100yds I don't think is possible with my rifle. 3 gun sounds interesting but I don't have a pistol or shotgun. Easy? Nahhh. But possible? Definitely!
Do a search for Kurt Miller. He is amazing with irons only.Comment

As for handgun/shotgun for 3 gun, anyone can start out with a basic pump action shotgun (870 edges mossy in the fact that extended mag tubes are easier to attach) and any basic handgun that shoots at least a 9mm and holds the standard 8-10 rounds.. with 1911's and glocks being popular.Comment
