From a fighting perspective you should continue your search & assess while holstering.
    Why not?

Why do you search & assess while holstering? Why not finish search & assess, then look to holster?

In USPSA, you cannot afford not to look at your holster when reholstering. I think it's good practice to look at your holster in IDPA as well. Pretty dumb to DQ by dropping your gun while holstering.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I use the Safariland 568 Custom Fit for my 1911 in ESP. Sub 1 second draws without cover garment all day. With the vest, about 1.1-1.2; I'll take it.

Call_me_Tom,You speak from experience...? Yes, I do.

Competition shooting is not tactical training, it is competition. There are range rules and liabilities to adhere to. Pointing a loaded gun at yourself is an automatic DQ in both USPSA and IDPA.

Any chance to keep it on topic for the OP's benefit?

I'm not discussing USPSA/IPSC, I'm discussing IDPA which is a format that is supposed to be based off of practical or realistic shooting. There are plenty of people out there who took their eyes off of the enemy and ended up getting shot. Some are paralyzed and some are dead.

If one can not holster a weapon without pointing it at themselves or others then they should choose a different holster...or better yet, practice.

Sorry, You first referenced gun fighting, not IDPA, while searching & assessment while holstering. That's why I asked, why you would holster while searching & assessing.

I shoot IPSC & IDPA. I practice a bit, but I still glance down at the holster when holstering, everytime. Never had to worry about a sihlouette target shooting back.

Never been in a real gunfight, either.

Kydex is hard on the gun finish. The Safarilands have a felt liner to cushion the gun at the cost of speedier draw.

i just dont worry about the appearance of any gun i use for competition.

i use fobus holsters for most of my guns. theyre cheap, kydex and some models come with retaining screws to adjust retension.

i also have a bladetech for my usp. twice as expensive.

i never tried safariland but theres one thing that occured to me about a felt holster, i dont know about where you shoot, but where we shoot its super dusty and theres super fine grain dirt that gets into everything. i wonder if the felt could get so dirty that grit might scratch the surface of your gun?

I bought a stainless gun so I don't have to worry about being hard on the finish lol

I ordered the Safariland 567. Read that holstering it for a couple nights will help it fit quicker. Only $38 to my door. Also read hitting the inside with spray silicone will help with draw a bit.

I'll eventually get the Tucker Kydex but didnt want to drop $100 on a holster right out of the box plus the 4+ week lead time killed it.

The finish wont get removed on the stainless but it could scratch in the wear spots a kydex gives.

I went to order from Opticsplanet. They had a HUGE stock and great prices. Ordered a few things then got an email hours later items werent in stock and it would be 5-10 days BEFORE they knew if they were getting them. I googled Opticsplanet and I guess they are notorious for this. I found a dealer in Greenbay that had 1 left.

I use the Safariland 567 (belt loop style) for my 92FS in both IDPA and USPSA.

Practice breaking it in, and use some silicone spray on the inside of the leather to work it in and your draw will be smooth.
