What qualifications do you need ands how do you go about becoming a certified law enforcement firearms instructor? I work in executive protection, have a CCW, and am an NRA Certified RSO and Pistol Instructor

California L/E instructors are certified by going through a POST certified instructors course. There are private companies that also train L/E by being certified through POST. POST must certify their instruction outline as being good to go to teach California L/E.

I was POST certified as a Patrol Rifle instructor by submitting our Patrol Rifle course to POST and my instructor experience. My L/E instructor team was given the go by POST to teach active L/E Officers. This was before there was any POST certified "Patrol Rifle courses".

If you want to be "certified" to teach California L/E, I believe you would need to be certified by POST to teach. There are private companies that are POST approved. There are others that may teach L/E, but are not POST approved.

The reason to be POST approved is the L/E agency gets state money reimbursement for POST approved training, which is attractive to Agencies and to the Officers for having POST approved training on their training records.

I would suggest you contact POST to get your questions answered. If you wanted to get your foot in the door, I suggest you contacting any of the POST approved private companies and speak to them about being an instructor.

If you want to teach L/E, I believe you would need a very attractive R'esum'e if you are not active L/E.
