    I killed an Hostage :-(

    Actually.... a headshot too :-(

During a 3-guns Shotgun-Rifle stage, after the shotgun part, we are supposed to run up an alley and engage a group of targets at a CLOSE range with our rifle (my 16" EOTech equipped M4gery).

There is a BG(bad guy), with a NS(no shoot, hostage) right underneath it. Basically they are vertically aligned, and the NS's head is taped half way down, and covering the lower half of the BG-chest's A-zone.

While I was running right up close(maybe only 6ft away), and I shot the BG once, with my EOTech aim'ed at the upper half of the BG-chest's A-zone. The round ended up striking the hostage's head..... :-(

I guess, with a 50yds(or 100yds) zero..... the impact point would be kinda *low* at 2in.... :-(

I should remember that next time... to hold higher.... or to actually adjust my EOTech to have a 25yds zero....

Yep. Most people only think about hold-overs for long-distance shooting but it's a factor in close-in stuff as well.

Your round travels in a parabola. If zero'd at 50 yards (which is recommended), at 2 yards you'll shoot ~3 inches low (depending on how high your sight is mounted - bullet is travelling up at this point). As you approach 50 yards you'll get closer to dead on (since you're zero'd at 50). Then you'll end up ~5 inches high at 100, and dead on again at 200 (bullet now falling).

You should definitely know your hold-overs for 5, 15, and 25 yards. For full target shots just aim for the top of the A zone and you'll be fine but for headshots you need to know how high to aim.

Did you have to send a letter of condolence?

Back when I was a young pup, we had tank simulator training for gunnery. I blasted an M1A1 that was heading for me (simulated foggy smokey conditions with rounds landing all over the place). The gun was pointed at me so I thought it was a threat (resolution wasn't the best in the Sim).

The operator made the crew each write a condolence letter to the "family". "Sorry, but I killed your son...."

Are you sure it was a hostage? I find a great deal of the "hostages" are actually collaborators. Let (insert you deity here) sort them out.

you should make a movie with that... maybe starring Denzel. Interweave a story about a woman Medal of Honor nominee, too.

It's easy to forget the close-up difference. We're all accustomed to trying to shoot further and further. The idea of shooting 10 feet feels weird, almost trivial... but just like those so-called "gimmes" in golf...

Friendly fire always makes a good story. I'm waiting for the "Lifetime presents: The Pat Tillman Story" starring James Brolin as Donald Rumsfeld and Chris Kattan as President George W. Bush.

Even a 25 yard zero won't be enough at that point to compensate for your holdover.

Practice your shots at 5, 10, 15, 20 yards to see the holdover & know what you have to do.

I shot my first no shoot target back in June, , that was kinda sucky.

At extreme close range, you can just look down the barrel, both eyes open, over the front sight only, and still shoot accurately. If you havent tried it before, try it, it works well.

One of the clubs I used to shoot at would give you an HK hat pin. HK was giving them to us, thinking we where advertising their firearms. Little did they know, we used it to award the "Hostage Killer"
