I've got a friend who recently moved to San Diego from Canada. He is completely new to firearms. He's a brand new American citizen and 2A supporter and politically, he wants to stick with it, so is interested in a good basic handgun class. He's definitely more a verbal learner than a physical one. Any suggestions for a good source of training that's not too expensive? I'd like to turn his theoretical desire of gun ownership into a fulfilling practical experience.

American Shooting Center offers beginner classes- Talk to them about but I think this should suit your friend quite nicely.
I also believe Ironsights up in Oceanside offers an introductory class as well (but I'm really not sure).
What would really be ideal is to have someone show your friend some good basics. Seems like he/she is lacking some basic fundamentals. A few hours and your friend could easily be up to speed on the mechanics behind shooting a pistol.

I did the one up at Ironsights... very basic, basically going over the safety rules, how to operate and hold the gun, and then 50 rounds at the range. A decent start before deciding to go to a multi-day class and will at least give him some confidence as he starts getting interested in firearms.Comment

I'm pretty sure Bill Deasy (sp?) goes by the handle CCWUSA or something like that here on calguns. If I'm not mistaken he is one of the instructors for classes offered @ ASC. He was at a carbine/pistol class I took here in SD and was an excellent instructor, knows his stuff and is quick to offer solutions to whatever you need. Another vote for Bill Desy. I've known Bill for a number of years and shot many a match with him, took my CCW class with him too. Good guy, good instructor.Comment

Both Bill (William Desy) and Dave (Dave Bridgman) are great guys.. I've known them both for a few years.. I wouldn't hesitate sending anyone I know to either of them for pistol instruction..
Dave and his son Joe, are actually the one's who introduced me to USPSA.. When I took the Intermediate Pistol class over at American Shooting Center, Joe was one of the instructors.
I've never taken a class with Bill, but I'm very confidant of his abilities.
If you end up taking a class with either of them, tell them the little Vietnamese guy- Vu says, "Hi". Actually on 2nd thought, that might not be such a great idea
