1911/IDPA CDP recommended ammo and springs?

    Hey,

My shooting buddy is using a full-sized 1911 to compete in IDPA's CDP division. He is using a Springfield 1911 which is still factory stock. He just moved up to Sharpshooter class.

He wants to know what factory ammo is the best choice (specifically what bullet weight is best), and what weight recoil spring to use. He is not using a full-length guide rod or a bushingless/cone barrel.

He knows that reloading your own ammo is the ideal, but he doesn't have the time or resources to get into that right now.

    Thanks,

    Jim

My understanding is all factory ammo designed for 18# pound spring.
Unless your friend wants to go into reloading there is not much to choose from.
Also, his time might be the issue, but if he shoot a lot, reloading can give him the best performance possible, better than any factory ammo.

Winchester White Box and a 18 or 18.5 spring.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

+1 on the Winchester White Box and the 18# spring.

White box is really the best factory stuff? Scary.

You might want to register with www.1911.org and toss the same question at them. You'll get a lot more info, particularly about recoil springs. They just had a thread recently about using heavier recoil springs like 18&1/2 and 20's. They'll strip rounds off your mag with more pressure, but it may be a lot harder on your frame. There was lots of discussion about this recently. Enough for me to conclude I should stick with the 16 Lb spring that comes stock with my Kimber Custom II unless I get failures. I changed to McCormick mags and 18 & 1/2 Lb recoil springs to cure a failure to load/eject symptom. Changing to better mags may have been all I needed to do.

What makes one brand of ammo better than another brand?

McCormick mags have run flawless in my 1911. Have had some problems with the Wilsons.

These are reloads, but my friend swear by them.

I use Wilson Combat (8 and 10 rounds) and Chip McCormick (8 round) mags.

There is a guy I shoot USPSA with that uses Precision Delta ammo.

I noticed the the boxes even tells you what power factor it should make.

He buys it by the 1000's and never had any issues with it.

For 40 major I use WWB, 9MM WWB, Cheap, accurate, Clean. My local Wal-Mart always has some in stock.
For minor 40 I use Atlanta Arms. Soft, but a little dirty.
