First timer here with questions.

Hi all,
I am gaining interest in competitive shooting. I have been searching on here for some info but everything looks very convoluted and kinda hard to figure out.

All I would like to know is how to get started. I kinda know what I need for gear but I just don't want to walk up to a match and have no idea what to do.

Head out east on the 91 to Corona.. It's Rauhaguee'ssss range (AKA Norco for North Corona).

The club out there is Norco Run N' Gun (NRG) and is run by Jojo and Dennis. It's a great club with a lot of support for beginners. If you're new, Dennis and/or Jojo personally take you under their wing to get you oriented. Everyone starts somewhere and so long as you're attentive and have a good head about safe gun handling, that's more than enough to go out and give it a try. As I said, Jojo and Dennis are very, very friendly towards new shooters. Simply show up and during the sign in process, tell "Jimmy" that you're a new shooter and they'll squad you accordingly. The club really encourages everyone to come out and give it a try.

The club shoots every Saturday morning starting from about 8:00 AM to last call (around 2ish?). They definitely welcome and encourage new shooters. They have some loaner gear like holsters and mag pouches, so it's a nice way of getting into the sport without having to invest heavily.

Bring all the things you normally would like gun, magazines, ammo (~250 rounds), eye/ear pro..etc etc as you can always leave what you dont' want to carry in your car..

It's a great time, I hope you give it a try.

Step one: Find a place that has a good competition set-up. (Soem may be close, but may also be lousy places to shoot/learn).

Step two: Go frequent the matches BEFORE attending them. This is the best way to get a feel for how they are run. You can also knock on some ears, and get good ideas of the gear needed for matches. (Instead of stupid, internet, "Tacti-Cool" stuff which has no place in a match).

Step three: Make friends with folks who are shooting similar firearms. It's cool to meet everyone, in every division. (Cuz eeveryone has something to offer). But it is more "beneficial" to hook-up with someone who is shooting the same firearms as you (IN THE SAME DIVISION), so you can learn the tricks for what you have.

Good luck, Im barley going to make it to richmond this week, Chabot is just to far, along with that I only have about 30 rounds of 7.62, just enough to get a zero dialed in and run 1 course with it.

Maybe in a few weeks after vacation and I can get a case of ammo orded up, Ill come up. What kind of distances they shootin' up there

I believe they will be doing everything on the 200-yard range.

Two hundred yards is nice because it is not far, but yet far enough that you need to work on your handguard control. Good practice!!

You don't need a NATO round. Just come with a .223 that has a 200-yard zero.

WRXKid, you are lucky enough to live close to Norco and Prado. We will be at Norco this Sat, so like Voo said, come on by. You can see how things work, and if you are comfortable, sign up and shoot, and if not, show up with your gear next time and shoot. Don't get lost in the rules of the game, the only thing that is important for a newbie is keep your finger off the trigger unless there is a target in front of you and don't point the gun at the RO. Shoot fast, have fun.
