    ISI Compact Competition 8-14

I am looking to go out to the ISI match at Piru on 8/14.

I have been shooting 3-gun for the past couple of months, but I would like more of a pistol challenge. Being my first pistol match, I am not quite sure what to expect. This is a "compact" match, IDPA rules, I believe.

I will be using my XD40 subcompact. However, all I have right now is the "gear" that comes with the pistol. The XD holster and mag holder. Will this work for the match? At least until I figure something better.

Also, I will need something to conceal. I have seen vest that guys wear, but will a baggy shirt work for now? I don't expect to be too competitive, but I don't want to be at a complete disadvantage.

    Thanks in advance.

I will be at that match hopefully. The stuff that comes with the XD will be fine (If I remember correctly, it is a 2 mag holder and holster).

The holster needs to cover the trigger, but I am pretty sure it does.

For concealment, if you have a vest or heavy denim shirt that will work.

I would strongly recommend that you don't use a shirt - it makes it too easy to get it caught in the trigger when holstering. If you have a heavy denim shirt or a lightweight jacket you can use that. They won't require it for every course of fire. But they might DQ you from competition if you don't have one (they will let you shoot I am pretty sure - you just won't be competing because you would be sort of cheating).

Oh, I would bring 4 mags if you have them.

      2 - in the belt

      2 - in a pocket

When they tell you to load your weapon, put one mag in the well and chamber a round. Put it back in your pocket. Take the other full mag out and place it in the well so you have 10+1. You don't have to do it that way, but I find it easier.

I have a fishing vest that I use that has a nice pocket for the magazines. you can get them at Sport Chalet. Or you could go all out and get a 5.11 if you want that is more designed for it. But try it first to see if you like it (but I bet you will). I will be the only guy there with a revolver =)

Check out the videos posted here for "ISI IDPA 7-24-10" http://www.youtube.com/user/teambossing#p/u and you'll get a sneak peak of some of the stages you will be running on the 14th. For the compact match ISI runs the same courses of fire as the previous month's regular IDPA match (so Aug compact is the same as July IDPA). You can also shoot a non-compact if you prefer. At least half the shooters shoot non-compact and are scored separately.

As far as a cover garmet, wear whatever you have. Anything with a heavier material will be easier to sweep out of the way on the draw, but keep in mind it can get pretty hot out there.

Look at the IDPA orientation materials here http://www.idpaforum.com/images/Welc...A_Shooting.pdf. IDPA has a lot of rules and they are not all obvious. In particular, make sure you know the rules about reloading - God help you if you drop a mag with a round left in it.

The compact match at ISI is pretty low key. This is not the nationals and no one is going to check the legality of your cover garment. Just tell the woman at the check-in desk and each RO that it's your first time shooting IDPA and they will make sure to explain what you need to know on each stage. Most of all - remember to have fun. If the range is convenient to you, I predict you will keep coming back.

Just got back from the match . . .

Great time! This was just what I was looking for.

This is defiantly the way to practice shooting, instead of sitting on a lane for an hour. I got there right at 8:20, and was done with each stage well before 10:00. So, I decided to go through it again and "2nd Gun". I got stuck behind a couple of groups, but I was still done by 11:45.

I still have a lot to learn, and a lot more to practice, but I was safe and efficient. I think I have a new addiction!

Thanks to all, everyone was friendly and accommodating. Also, thanks for all the info Calgunners.

              ISI Compact Competition 8-14

Glad you had fun! On IDPA weekend (4th Saturday), they have a meeting at 10:30 with everyone. They pass out the awards for the month and give out some door prizes. They also talk a little about what is going on locally in the shooting sports and such.
