IDPA rules on barrels.

Hello, I was wondering about some IDPA rules that concern the use of barrels. I know that compensated barrels cannot be used in the SSP and ESP classes.

If I had a Sig P229 originally chambered in .40 S&W, can I use a 9mm conversion barrel on it since the Sig P229 is offered in 9mm, .357 Sig, and .40 S&W?

If I had a Sig P220 chambered in .45 ACP, can I use an extended barrel if it is also chambered in .45 ACP for SSP and or ESP? (approximately .5 to .6 longer than stock).

Regarding the P229, yes you'd still be legal in SSP and ESP as long as it's a factory length barrel.

You're in a bit of a gray area with the P220. It's not listed in the "Permitted" or "Excluded" modifications for ESP (you'd definitely not be legal in SSP). My thinking is, probably not legal unless it's an available factory option.

Edited: I should have read your post closer. The 9mm conversion barrel is not dimensionally the same as a factory 9mm barrel, and thus not legal for IDPA. It is a "visible exterior modification", and not of factory configuration. A .357 Sig conversion would be legal.

On the 229 no problem at a club match. If the gun isn't marked as far as caliber other than the barrel then you could change from 40 to 9.

No on the 220.

As Randy stated, for a club match go shoot and have fun. It would only be an issue at a major match. I have a Glock 35 that I have a 9mm barrel and I shot that a our club matches, no problems.

The 9mm conversion barrel has thicker walls to fit the 40 slide. A good tech inspector will spot it at a major match and you'd earn a DQ.

At club matches, yeah, not a problem. Most clubs only look for glaring equipment violations, and even then you'd probably just get a little schooling.
