Best production Gun on the California Roster?

I've been shooting IDPA with a CZ75 SA in ESP class and a Kimber .45 in CDP, but I'm looking for a gun to shoot in IDPA and USPSA production division and am stuck between the CZSPO1 and M&P 9. I've been leaning towards the CZ because, of its winning reputation, the fact that I could use the same mags as my 75, and my 75SA fits me like a glove. However, I don't own a polymer frame handgun yet, and like any new gun purchase, I'm thinking "how does this round out my collection." Having shot all three, the M&P is by far my favored choice over Glock and XD so I was looking at the 5in model, but of course its not on the roster. I am considering getting the M&P and just buying a 5" slide but at that point I feel like I should just go CZ and have all the ease it presents. What has been your experience and observation with each, or is their another production gun out their I should be thinking about?

    Thanks In Advance

If I was going to run a CZ or a M&P I would get the gun from the following already tuned for competition:

The CZ set up by Angus Hobdell: http://www.ghostholster.com/
    or
    Matt Mink: http://www.matthewmink.com/equip.htm

If you go with a M & P have Dan Burwell do the trigger. He also might have a hook up for the 5 inch slide assembly:

Two choices you don't mention are the XD or a Sig.

For the XD go here: http://www.springerprecision.com/

A good choice for the Sig is: http://grayguns.com/

I had the same decision as you to make and I chose a Glock 34. All I added is grip tape and Sevigny sights: http://www.cpwsa.com/warren_sevigny_sights.htm

The M&P with it's empty mag to drop the hammer feature stinks for Competitive Shooting.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Thanks guys. Angus did my CZ75SA and it is a dream to shoot. A CZ would be on its way to him or Mink the day I picked one up

Thank for the other options. I've never been a big glock fan but I should revist Sig and Springfield.

To really compete in action pistol I feel that a non manual safety trigger system is the way to go. Glock, M&P, XD are 3 that seem to be the most popular. I also like a 5" gun, more weight on the front, reduces flip.
The most important is how does the gun fit your hand. I love the Glock, but hate the grip angle. My choice is an XD tactical. I have been shooting the
9 MM for 5 years, just got the XD45 Tactical. Will be able to shoot that in CDP and ESP (with minor loads) for IDPA, USPSA I could shoot it in Limited 10.
Plus the XD does not have that damn mag safety BS.

I've just started working on my own CZ for the same hybrid reason (and I shoot a 75 SA in ESP too! ), I'm taking this time to do the gun work myself to learn a thing or two. Surprisingly it's a lot easier than I thought it would be once you have the right tools. And it's a lot of fun and a good learning experience for me having it apart.

If you're mechanically inclined you might give it a try on your new CZ. Barring the trigger job (the most complicated part), you can easily:

            - change your own sights (drilling/carving the half-hole in the front takes patience)
            - replace your springs (main, recoil, firing)
            - polish up your firing pin block
            - polish up your transfer bar
            - replace your mag brake

The thing about the trigger job is mainly you cannot use their competition hammer or change to the 85 Combat trigger (IDPA SSP illegal, puts you in ESP). These are two of the biggest reasons to get it done by the CZ Custom shop...

I wish I could personaly do the work , but other than a detailed cleaning I don't trust myself. I'd love to watch over Angus' shoulder as he did the work though and learn a thing or two. I found a great deal on an SP01 and I think I may need to grab it. However, the M&P still calls to me in the polymer arena. Though I do love the idea of having common magazines and grip angle as my 75SA(I really love that gun, feels like cheating to shoot it compared to my .45) so the SP01 just makes perfect sense.

On a side note, I was also interested in a production gun because I'm looking for a new bedside gun that I could mount a weapon's light on. I figured I would shoot competition with the gun so I would be very comfortable with it as a home defense tool, god forbid I ever had to use it. I figure any production gun could do great double duty as long as the trigger wasn't too light and it had a light rail. Though I feel both the CZ and M&P would do a great job in this role, the M&P just stands out as better option due to its constant striker action...decisions decisions

lots of good suggestion in the above replies, but there is a lack of stress of hand fit. Some handguns will fit you hand size and style of shooting better than some others -- and what is good for you may not be the best for someone else. View the gun as just another part of your hand and an extenuation arm just like you might with a tennis racket or golf club. For me I have small hands and Glocks just don't work well for me.

While I have dropped handgun shooting for trap shooting, the same principal applies there, too.

But ultimately, it is the shooter's skill rather than his gun that wins competitions. You might be best served by saving your money and using it to buy more practice ammo.
Too old for this and I'm just a junior member? Too old this refers to Ducati's and not women and other things like trap shooting, etc.

I love my SP-01 for USPSA Production shooting. If the 75 ergonomics work for you I don't see a reason to change.

W/ the SP-01 you can either practice the DA/SA transition and start the stage w/ safety off and hammer down or practice dropping the safety as you draw. I first used the DA/SA transition method but as I got into 3-gunning and bought a Limited gun (CZ-75 TS which is SA only) I practiced hitting the safety on my draw and find that to be quicker.

I LOVE my CZ SP-01...get the cocked and locked version and skip all the DA/SA crap. M&P's are alright, but several departments already dropped them from their roster due to problems...I read somewhere on this site??

Sig P226 SRT (short reset trigger) It's on the list- even though guys that feel an SRT sig complain that it should not be with its 1911-like reset.

Given that the OP's id is IDPA$U, he has to lower the hammer on the first shot if he is shooting SSP. ESP can be cocked and locked.

                          HK USP with Match Trigger.

You can get the USP Expert still, or you can send a regular USP to HK and have them install the match trigger.
