I've decided I need to tune-up my HD shotgun skills and have been watching a number of shotgun demonstration/training/class videos (I'll be taking classes soon) and hear the frequent gripe about the available Dummy shells not accurately simulating live cartridge weight. Indeed, the Dummys I just bought weigh 36 grams and are case-head heavy, while my various buckshot loads weigh between 47 and 60 grams and are (obviously) crimp-end heavy.
So did a little pondering and came up with an idea to improve the Dummys in overall weight and weight distribution. The Dummys are Boolit Eye Pro 12GA Gauge Shotgun Safety Trainer Cartridge Dummy Rounds, 12 Pack - about $20 off the web. I stuffed a measured segment of 5/8" foam backer rod into each Dummy (Dummy wad?) and topped with 12 grams (A 2.3 cc Lee Powder Dipper's worth) of #5 shot, squeezed a bead of clear Shoe-Goo from a small syringe on the inside edge, and pressed-in 9/16" black nylon hole plugs. This gives the Dummys a finished weight of 50 grams, and a more "realistic" heft (they are still not balanced correctly, but better than they were).
Anyway, I though this my be of use to you shotty folks...and if you have done something to make Dummy cartridges more functional, please let us know.
