2023 Central Califonia Section Coastal Classic Match Footage

My goal for this match (based on the Carry Optics roster) was top 10 with a stretch goal of top 5. I figured that top 10 would be somewhere in the upper 80% and the top 5 could be in the 90% range. This is important because I figured this match had the potential to allow for a match bump to M (straight bump or match percentage counting as a classifier). I've been languishing in A-Class and currently sit at 84.6%.

By the way: It was great shooting with SG29736 and, on occasion, we didn't vacate the stage quickly enough and ended up seeing NorthBay Shooter!

Hopefully we can bring this back next year!

Feel free to leave any questions, comments, and critiques--I know I have several of my own!

Yes it was fun. Let me tell you, Rez805 can shoot. I saw that you did beat a bunch of Master shooters. Was it enough for the bump? I shot well for me but did have my worst stage ever. Never spaced out on one like that before. The weather even cooled down today. I'll definitely be back.

It should be enough for a bump (50 in the division, 3 GM shooters who finished at 90%+, and I exceeded the cap for A Class by 5% (i.e., I exceeded 89.999%).

And yes, Stage 4 got a lot of us. I know I ended up wasting a second or two on an unnecessary make-up shot.

Nice job. What did you think of the match?

Super sad I missed this match. The last time they hosted a major was either the year I started shooting. I?ve wanted to shoot a major at this range for a long time. Luck has it that it fell on the same weekend as my daughter?s wedding. Hopefully they?ll have another one next year.

Rez805 was on fire. Besides being a good shooter, was a total class act. Hopefully I can squad with him sometime down south. I watched him shoot a couple of stages. Always great to meet another calgunner.

Well, that sounds like a level 3 match in and of itself! Congrats!

Overall, it wasn't that bad considering the short notice (MD made the decision around March or so, but I guess the traditional wisdom is plan a year in advance). This past weekend also had a Nationals match to contend with and many competitors weighing this amongst other big matches in October: The Echo1 So-Cal State Championship and the Grid Iron. This could be one hell of a month for those who can compete at all three. I think there was an empty bay during the main match . . . I would imagine we could accommodate a couple extra squads during the 2 day and a couple more squads on the Friday all-day. Keep in mind that the 2-day schedule started at 8AM and ended around Noon. That gave visitors to the area a lot of time to explore the area.

The stages ranged from "only one way to shoot this" (e.g., stage 1) to "I see a few options, but I don't think my skills draw me towards a specific one . . . but the GM's probably saw it differently" (e.g. stage 8 and 10), to "I bet the designer wishes they specified no travel outside the shooting area" (stage 6). A lot of uprange movement, too.

The "memory" stage (Stage 2) wasn't really a memory stage (not like that one stage a Grid Iron a couple years ago, they did a good job working with positioning on that one). It was 2 positions if you blended well and if you felt sporty you could sprint trough. The Stage 2 CO winner burned it down in 11.6 seconds. Had he not gotten an mike, he would have really hurt our feelings (i.e., 2nd place CO on that stage would have had 80% as opposed to 91%)

Stages 1-5 were more compact due to the bay sizes.
            Stages 6-10 were larger.
The bays face East, so the early morning sun was rough on Saturday. Oh and the weather was another factor. We had a high pressure ridge so Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were 90-100. Then Sunday was cooler with fog for the first couple hours.

Direct Links (I made the video in order of shooting)
            Stage 1
            Stage 2
            Stage 3
            Stage 4
            Stage 5
            Stage 6
            Stage 7
            Stage 8
            Stage 9
            Stage 10

I chatted with the CO winner during the all-day (I was walking through) and he noted that some of the stages may seem like hoser stages, but you have to respect the alphas. Essentially, people in contention are going to have comparable times, so whoever collects the most points wins--everyone in the top 20 in CO shot 90% points or higher.

The shot difficulties varied, there were some distance change ups, and there were several instances where you could be lulled into double engaging a target (that happened to me at the end of stage 10).

Positioning, blending, and tight windows of shooting were stressed in several stages.

There were a couple of stages with a "standing anywhere inside/outside of the shooting area", but there was either one valid option (e.g, stage 5), or it came down to starting in the far left or far right (e.g., stage 7).

There were a higher number of NPMs in this match than I recall seeing at other matches. There were instances where they appeared at the end (e.g., Stage 1 which cost me some stage points), and some where you had the option based on timing (e.g., Stage 5 had an option through a port and at the end which would be a "headsup" decision as you enter the final position. I made the mistake of waiting for a second pass).

The only stage I would adjust was stage 3. The wall angle and start position made muzzle awareness crucial. I know we like our 179* presentations, but man that first position must have sucked for lefties. A small angle adjustment for the main wall would have eased some anxiety.

Thank you, sir! Great to meet you and I hope to see you at the next one.
