BEST COLOR FOR A SCOPE DOT

Hey folks,

I have another question.

I am going to mount an Trijicon Accupoint TR24 3G variable scope onto my AR-rifle.

But before I commit to the green dot, I wanted to get your opinions.

This scope comes with a green or an amber dot.

Which would be better to use for competition?

I know that green is a color that the eye distinguishes, and finds, very quickly (which is why I am going in this direction)...but what about the amber color? What is the benefit of the amber color on a "dot sight"?

I'd like some insights into this topic of "dot color".

In closing, I KNOW that the color green is very easily seen with the naked eye during daylight hours. And I know that dots and reticles in the color green have a very well defined outer silhouette - which is great for holdover usage.

As for the amber color...I'm not so sure yet. I know from my past military training that the color red is used because it causes the least interference with your night vision. This is why you see red in a lot of military applications.

But amber?

Something I did not take into consideration (because I do not have first-hand experience with the German #4 reticle), is the size of the green dot.

I guess being that it "is" pretty small, it would be prone to be missed in very bright lighting.

Hmmmmm...

I think I am still leaning towards the green dot...but now in the triangle.

If I were to choose between the two (NOW), I think I would definately go towards the triangle.




The fact that the smaller green dot kinda washes out, and the fact that I will be better able to acquire my close-range targets easier with the green triangle, is an eye-opener.

Darn, now I need to rethink a few things.

But it looks like the German #4 reticle is out of the picture now.

I use the TR21A amber reticle I had the 21Red but I didn't like it as well. The red bloomed too much I don't seem to get that with the amber.

I guess we'll wait for your report on the green.

I'm running a TA31G and in direct sunlight your not going to miss your triangle. Mine bloomed like crazy that I actually had to cover up fiber optic a bit.

A couple of the 3gun vets like bullitt (Trijicon engineer) and Cold recommended the Amber Ger No 4 to me so I went with that model. Having seen both the amber and green Ger No4 TR24s, I happen to agree with them that the green is tough to see in bright sunlight. I cant shoot the triangle worth a damn.
Raymond, if you're really curious, come down to Morrow Bay tomorrow and you can check it out yourself. I think there's another TR24 shooter there too with a diff color and reticule.

I have no idea where Morrow Bay is.

I was at Richmond today for the whole afternoon.

I just got home, and am gonna try to knock out a thousand .45 rounds before I get to bed. If I accomplish this, I will be at Yolo county tomorrow at the pistol match.

Then I gotta fly home to pick-up the wifey-poo from work and head straight to evening church services.

Oh yea...by the way. I have decided to sell my Smitty 627 V-comp .357 Magnum.

That puppy is the cat's meow!

I have too many toys right now, so I have decided to sell it and spend MO MONEY on a scope.

My wife loves me even more now, as the sold revolver will fund my scope...and I will not have to "dip" into the checking account (which is my money anyways? ) to pay for the glass. And if I get a pretty penny for the scope, I might move it up a notch, and get a Swarovski or a Night Force.

Still meditating on which dirextion I will go. Nothing is written in stone yet.

PS: My Smitty V-Comp is an 8 shot .357 magnum, with a Miculek custom trigger and a 4-dot scope. (I'm gonna clean it up and post it later).
