Looking for carbine training class west coast

I signed up for Gunsite's week long carbine class. Currently a buddy is taking the same class in pistol form this week. He says it is very entry level and I won't get much out of it. Their rifle class is pretty much the same. All the basics of how to run and clean the gun. Something I don't need a refresher in.

I compete in local carbine club matches and am fairly well versed in the use and operation of a rifle. In the last year I have taken a couple carbine classes, Gamut Resolutions (Robert Keller, former Delta) and another informal local instructor.

Thunder Ranch is on my short list but they are all booked up this year.

    Thanks for the help.

    Lesson Plan.

When a student claims to prior experience, no problem. How did Ronald say it? Trust but verify?

Find an instructor that you respect. Ask him for his lesson plan. See how your skills measure up.

Generally speaking I don't have a problem with action shooting competition. Heck, I highly recommend it. However...

Course design is such that +90% of the competitors can complete the course of fire. Fine. It is entertainment. Participation in action shooting is supposed to fun and easy. And if you run real fast, the timer can skew the appearance of poor marksmanship or other gun handling skills.

A good instructor can spot an individual's weak skills a mile away. Sadly, many shooters believe the answer(s) are in different shooting disciplines or just run faster totting a game-gun.

Compare the lesson plan with your current skills. Good luck and have fun.

What are you looking to improve on in your shooting? You could probably be working on personal fitness and/or working with a shot timer more often than you are now.

Remember in general shooting is accuracy vs. speed and if you get one dialed in you should gas the other until you break both and start over. Shooting clean 10's 5x on the target over 10m? Great. Go faster. Etc.

If you're looking for small unit tactics you should probably be consuming the readables available and working with friends/partners, not paying a class.

I'm not discounting training. I'm just saying if you feel like the official courses aren't actually available you might want to assess what you're looking to train and figuring out how you can do it yourself for the cost of ammo ONLY.

        Hambam,

That is a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of that but it makes perfect sense.

I am a very proficient pistol shooter and shoot a rifle off a bench well. Appleseed events are a favorite of mine. So far my best is a 246 using a bullet button scar 17. That was a challenge.

        Digitalbravo,

Better speed and accuracy with different distances, positions. A shoot house sounds fun and something I have never done.

The most important thing is getting out of my comfort zone and meeting like minded people. I wouldn't shoot as much as I do if I wasn't around people. I never understood the point of having your own private range shooting by yourself. Boring.

        Any recommendations on books?

        Thanks for taking the time.

        Sammy

There is something always to be learned from a good instructor no matter you perceived skill level. I highly recommend any and all classes at Gunsite. Even though you think your skill level is above what you perceive the class to be, you'll still be a much better shooter having taken the class then not. The object is to load your "tool chest" with as many different tools that you can master. You never know which tool will be the one to get you out of what ever situation you are in... Sometimes learning what not to do is just as important as learning what to do.... your mileage may vary...

If you need something in the So Cal area, try ITTS who work out of the Angeles Shooting Range: https://internationaltactical.com/courses_carbine.html
They do an excellent carbine class too....

Personally, I think if you're shooting competition on the regular, you need to find a instructor can shoot at a high level so you can take away a practice plan for yourself. It's going to be very hard for an instructor to diagnose your shooting issues if they haven't traveled that road themselves, IMO.

That is, if you're looking to take a class to improve your hard skills. Some dudes just take classes for the entertrainment value, if you know what I mean.
