We have LOTS of new handgun owners in the forum now, having become "woke" to the reality of the world after watching 8 months of riots/looting/criminal behavior by our fellow citizens nearly every night and now the reality of an very anti gun / anti 2A government at the federal level motivating people to buy their fist guns while they can get them.
New gun owners need to understand that tactical training and marksmanship and competition training are three very different things; Marksmanship training teaches you how to shoot your handgun, tactical training teaches you how to fight with your handgun, competition training teachers you...well, how to compete with your gun in IDPA/USPSA matches. There are a number of good schools around the state for you to consider...each will have different philosophies and approaches to solving the problem and each will have a different "vibe' as to how it goes about training;
Research any school you want to attend; ask in the "Competition, Action Shooting and Training" subforum here in calguns (https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...splay.php?f=19) . Look at the instructors bio/resume's for real world experience, especially real world experience AS TRAINERS in the LE/Mil community. Anyone who cant tell you what they have done and what qualifies them to be teaching you should be ignored. Look with suspicion at extremely high round count classes... Lots of shooting often masks a class with very little real instruction.
I personally prefer schools run by career professional Mil/LE trainers...and can recommend Max Joseph's Direct Action Group (https://dag-usa.com/) as both highly professional and effective. Classes are offered in both the LA and Sacramento areas throughout the year with a tactical pistol I/II upcoming in September in the LA / Burro Canyon location, assuming the Azuza fires aren't still raging.
Scott Reitz with ITTS also runs a solid program in Southern California. https://internationaltactical.com/
Note; these classes are not the place to learn how to shoot your gun for the first time... these are foundational classes to learn to fight with your gun...
Max Joseph (will be teaching the classes) is a professional LE/military trainer;
If you are going to own a handgun for self defense, I don't really care where you go... BUT GET SOME QUALITY PROFESSIONAL TRAINING... your life and the lives of your family may well depend on it!
