    Pistol Training

Anybody know of any good places to train in Southern California? Not an intro course, as I have been shooting my whole life.

    Thanks

If you are in SoCal, consider front sight outside of vegas.

People here can sell you a life membership for $100 or so

Then it costs a $50 background check per year to take a class + hotel etc.

Max Joseph with Dag is great

      Scotty with ITTS is great.

If you have not taken classes with instruction from shooting from a holster and concealed, I’d suggest front sight first.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
      (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

What are your goals, and what have you already done in terms of training?

There are a number of high-level trainers such as Bill Rapier, Kyle Defoor, etc. who come to California once or twice a year and are mostly advertised through word-of-mouth. Tom Kier (Sayoc Tactical Group) for instance, just delivered a two-day course at the new Route 66 range near Riverside. That was a word-of-mouth, someone-needs-to-recommend-you course. Knowing what exactly you are looking for might get you some more targeted recommendations.

Rapier https://www.amtacshooting.com for instance, is delivering two courses in December near LA.

Someone recommended ITTS, and they do offer more than 'beginners' courses and deliver solid training in general, but it's predicated towards square range drilling. It's done well and I recommend ITTS, but if you are looking for something more esoteric you will have a better chance of finding it if you can provide specifics.

If your schedule permits, I recommend Max Joseph over at Direct Action Group (DAG). They use Burro Canyon for their LA area training. I have trained with DAG, Gunsite and Academy of St. Crispian. Scotty Reitz over at ITTS runs a very well respected program as well; https://internationaltactical.com/

Max has his level I&II tactical pistol classes in the beginning of May.

These classes are definitely not classes to learn to shoot your gun for the first time but rather classes to learn how to fight with your gun. The Level I/II classes are foundational for developing correct muscle memory with regards to weapon manipulation/movement.
DAG’s pistol courses are well known and we have trained students of all skill levels. These courses encompass skill levels from beginning to advanced and special operations capable. You’ll learn safe handling, fundamentals, and marksmanship, and progress to demanding standards in our advanced pistol courses. These courses may be taken as a starting point or to enhance your existing skill. We recommend you take pistol courses at least once a year to maintain your skill.

                    Actually a good question I should have asked too. OP... are you looking for;

                    - Revisit/reconfirm the basics?
                    - Competition training/improvement?
                    - Tactical/self defense skills?

I think everyone should start with some good solid fundamental tactical training as the movement and weapons manipulation training will be the foundation of good competition training.

I just took a 3 day class with TPC and they were awesome. They do travel around some so I would check their site. I took the class in San Diego. May want to check Tactical Hyve also.

I used the NRA website to find instructors in my area. Really enjoyed taking classes at Burro Canyon. Also, just because you have been shooting your whole life, do not discount basic intro courses. Many of us hace been shooting wrong our whole lives...

                            Wow! Good for you...!

I really wanted to go, but the cost of ammo, lodging, etc. just didn't add up for now.

Although, I did get their online Handgun Mastery which covers the theory of that 3-day class.

Maybe next time when they are back in SoCal (I heard that they'd be doing a class in Richmond, just too far).

That said - Myles from Tactical Hyve is cool, too. Very practical form of instruction...!

If you search for front sight you will see that when people join at a certain price, they are given another 10-20 memberships they can sell or donate.

So the market is flooded with cheap memberships

Many people train a lot for 1 year and then life goes on

I trained for a bunch and now work to maintain my skill.
