Rifles - chamber flags between rounds

So at a recent match where I was using my PCC, the RSO suggested that I put my chamber flag down the mag well and close the bolt on it. He advised that sticking the chamber flag down the hot chamber could melt the flag in there. Is that a serious concern, or strictly anecdotal?

Could happen. I've had one of those yellow plastic chamber flags break the tip off in a 223 barrel and I've seen a few others. Had to find a cleaning rod to force it out from the muzzle. I've never seen a melted one. Probably won't happen in a PCC though.

i've deformed them in the barrel from a combination of heat and pressure from the bolt. i run them through the port and down the mag well if possible.

deformed yes. melted to the inside of the carbine or rifle, no.
Competition is where you find out you're slow, can't see well, are not accurate, have poor gun handling, can't visualize, have equipment that doesn't work and either accept it OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

There are many cheapo chamber flags out there.

You need on that is approved for service rifle competition.

The CMP and the NRA sell it by the dozen, or you can go to Brownells/Sinclair.

really no need to buy another flag if OP already has one.

just do what the RSO said and stick in so it goes down the magwell or continue to do what he has been doing and stick it in the chamber/barrel.
