Three Gun Rifle Question

So, I can't legally buy an AR but want to compete...what's the next best rifle to buy that is California legal?

why can't you "legally" buy an AR? at the x3 piru 3 gun match, there are several people running "detach-build" AR's, myself included.

as far as other rifles:
keltec su16 series
ruger mini-14
saiga's in .223
etc.
non of these will give you the accuracy or "mod-a-bility" of a AR15-platform rifle but you can still be "competitive" if the match you shoot at doesn't have targets that are too far away.
for instance, the piru 3-gun match has flashers that are up to 360-375 m/yds and at that distance if you're rifle isn't shooting around 1 MOA, you'll be sending a lot of rounds downrange.
if the match you frequent has more hoser stages than long range stuff you should be fine.

you should do more research on "detach-build" ar15 rifles and build one of those. the match i just shot (piru x3) had the following:
rifles- everyone had a ar15-platform rifle (whether shooting tac-ops, or open) *there is no heavy metal class at x3 matches.
shotguns- the majority shoot benelli (m1 or m2) or remmington 1100/1187 series shotguns with a couple of others scattered in there (superset shot a mossberg 930, etc. etc.)
pistols- s_i's, glocks, xd's, (pretty much anything 9mm or higher)

Yeah, that's what I am afraid of. Thanks for the advice everyone. It answers my question believe it or not.

Don't discount the Ruger Mini-14. You'll be surprised how well they can do with a good barrel and trigger job. My Dad has 20's and even 30's from forever ago on mags. With the above done and good ammo, it'll shoot 3/4 MOA.

As an alternative, the M1A/M14 platforms are VERY good and VERY competitive. Yeah there's more recoil, but then, that's what comps are for.

Do not rule out OLL's though with the appropriate grip.
