Looking for loading course instruction in San Diego

loader looking for a training course or someone that wants to take their time to train someone else that art of loading. Right now only looking for training for pistol. Would prefer training that would incorporate a Dillon 1050 with bullet feeder, as this is the unit I will be purchasing in the upcoming months. Also would like to learn about sensory equipment that can be added to loaders. I've been reading lots of books but want to get some first hand in depth instruction. I live in Carlsbad so looking for something within a reasonable distance. This can be private instruction or a professional organization. If anyone has any information please let me know. Thank you.

One I know of. I don't know anyone that has taken their course so I can't give a recommendation one way or another. Just an option.

Stop calling them Lawmakers. It only encourages them.

Never been to any of these, but have seen them and passing along to you.

Yes, La Mesa Collectibles in El Cajon does offer classes. I believe they are held monthly and the cost is about $75 IIRC.

Golf Guy here on Forum also holds classes periodically and I think those are free. You might try PMing him and see when the next class is scheduled.

Finally, there is also a class that I have seen here on the Forum that is held at Camp Pendleton. Not sure if it costs or not and I can't recall the name, but advertises regularly in the reloading Forum.

I was actually think about offing a one on one class, Single stage and progressive.

three hours of instruction and hands on ammo making.

But then I seen the LMC already had a deal going on so why bother. Oh wait they are a ammo shop which is a step down from a gun store so no telling what kind of FUD could be spewed there.

I don't have a 1050 but I have two RL550b's and two RCBS single stage presses and 25 years of reloading experience

Wishing the OP greet success finding anyone to give an entry level reloader instruction at 1050 speed.

Sort of like a student pilot with no hours in a plane getting trained in an F-16

yep these boys don't know you need to walk before you can run and they want to jump right out of the nest and fly.

You can't screw up good loads fast enough

Reload OC has classes. Brian is a very nice guy. It would be worth the drive to Anahiem.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses and PM's. Always appreciate everyone's good sense of humor as well, that's why I enjoy coming to this site so much. Thanks!

On a side note... I hope a lot of CalGunners are able to support Gunthers council meeting coming up in February for the requested opening of a new range in Carlsbad. Good luck to those guys!!

OP, good luck in your quest to find a class. I started reloading recently, I was told to do my own research and read Lyman's and Hornady's reloading manuals. Well, that and YouTube. I took a class at La Mesa Collectables to reinforce what I learned and felt that I had the confidence to start reloading on my own. Start out with a single stage press and work your way up. YMMV.

OP, echo6cavedog's advice is sound, you should learn to walk before running. Even if you are set on buying a 1050, buy an inexpensive single stage first and learn how to reload. Then learn how to reload with a high volume progressive. A 1050 and a new reloader is a recipe for generating hundreds of defective/very likely dangerous rounds really quickly and easily. Progressives are a great way for a novice to learn about all of the fun of pulling lots of bullets.

The thing about learning on a single stage is you become very familiar with each phase and why it fits where it does and what it does...then as you move onto a more sophisticated press the old single stage is handy as a pocket in a shirt for working up loads a few at a time (you are planning to work up loads aren't you) or doing a bit of decapping before cleaning, etc...things that a monster like the 1050 is not designed to do...setting up a 1050 to spit out 5 rounds of 4 or 5 different powder weights will not be practical...so if you have that old single stage in the corner..it will get used.

Might also contact Dillon and just level with them that you are not experienced and are looking to begin reloading...and do they suggest starting out with a 1050 or what...they are in the business of selling equipment but also have a reputation of safety and sanity to maintain...I got a feeling they might suggest something a bit tamer than "Ammozilla"

I agree with the others. I've been reloading since '88. Started with a Hand Press from Lee, then a small progressive and single stage. A DP 1050 will be a big handful. Get a single stage to wean yourself into this activity. You can always use it later for small precision batches of reloads. Find someone with a 1050 and watch it in action.
