I have a tumbler with walnut shells but my brass doesn't get real clean.. was wondering what machine and media every one was using

walnut shell with no extra cleaning agent just because I don't really care to go the extra mile.A dull finish makes it easier for me to pick out my brass amongst all the others.

I use walnut shell and nu finish car wax, just put a small amount in your walnut shells and let it run a bit, to get it well mixed, drop your brass in and let it go for about 4 hours or so (longer if necessary) I *think* the wax helps keep the brass from oxidizing after you're done (stays shiny longer).

This doesn't clean the inside of the cases all that well, but sure shines up the exterior.

I use walnut media with Dillon brass polish and tumble for about 2 hours. It works very good for me.

stainless steel media Thumblers tumbler. It works very good for a nice bright look. There is no dust but you do need to dispose of some pretty ugly water. Drying the brass can be tough as well if it is not hot outside or if you do not have a food dehydrator. Given all this I still like it the best.

Stainless tumbling and you'll never look back.

With a vibratory tumbler I tumbled with corn cob media and nu-finish wax. I tumbled for an hour and a half to two hours and had decent results but got tired of cleaning media out of flash holes and inside rifle cases.

Some I clean and spray a little lube.
Some I don't and spray a little lube.
Notice zero difference except for the shine which I could care less about.

I was a walnut tumbler as well. Finally made the jump to SS and finally got what all the hype was about. No mess/dust. No real maitinance. Just some dish soap, lemi shine water and get some amazing looking brass in a few hours.

Decap & stainless tumble, then size, trim and chamfer. Toss in walnut media with NuFinish for a while to buff and remove lube. Prime and load.
Shoot.
Repeat.

I toss all my brass into a 5 gallon bucket with water, vinegar and some soap. Its clean in 10 or 15 minutes.

Tumbling doesnt clean the inside well at all. The bucket method does great though.

I used it for some non-collectible coins and small machine parts.
But it is great for brass.

My method has been mentioned. I use a cheap Harbor Freight tumbler with walnut media, a little drop of car polish/wax, and some uncooked rice. Mix it for about 30 minutes and then throw the brass into the mix. Make sure to mix the ingredients first so the clumbs will be removed from the polish/wax.

Had this conversation a while ago with my Step Father. He never cleans pistol brass... when he taught me to reload, it was never a step in the process. Rifle, yes. He's never had a problem that was related to cleaning and says he won't change.

I clean everything, just habit now. I can't say one way or the other is completely correct, since both go bang.
