    JUST JOIN THE RELOADING CREW

I just purchased a RCBS starter kit, can't wait to get my Press and all the rest of items included in the kit. I know I will be needing some other stuff before I actually do my first reloading. The kit includes the RCBS Rock Chuck Supreme, priming hand tool, powder measure, scale 505, funnel, lub kit, deburring tool & manual. I also own a Barns manual don't remember the edition. I hope I can come back to the forum when I start getting questions. Can you recommend other stuff I need like case trimmer shell holder & dies. I will be loading for; 30-30, 30-06, 45colt, and maybe for 223.
any suggestions and Recommendations will be welcome.

    Thanks

Start with the straight wall colt first.

Get the basics down with the process and the equipment on the relatively simple colt cartridge before you venture into the world of bottle-neck rifle cartridges.

+1 on the above, start with the straight walled pistol rounds first. Pick up as many manuals as you can get your hands on, they all have different data and plenty of good reading material. Always take it slow and double check your powder loads before you seat the bullet. Keep your work area clear of outside brass and components. If you are working with a particular powder, put the others away. Same for brass, don't leave random brass laying around your work area. Working with a single stage, you will be working in batches. Make sure you don't start mixing things around. If you are working up two different powder loads, see the first one through all the way before starting another batch so that you don't confuse which ones are what.

There is a reloading class next weekend in Anaheim. If you are anywhere near it, I would recommend checking it out. There's nothing like learning first hand with an instructor. Here's the thread:

        read your manuals first!!!!!!

After I got my kit and set it up, I didn't touch it for a week or 2 until I read my manuals

Ditto to the above, read the manuals completly and start with pistol first. Compare the load data from the manuals and also most powder manufactures have load data that can also be used. I have been doing 9mm for a couple of months and now I am ready to venture into 30-06 . from what I heard a neck sizer prolongs the brass life but not to sure on that.
Good luck with your reloading and be safe

I started the opposite, started with 308 and 223 then moved into pistols, just because that's what I had brass for lol

For dies I recommend Lee, mostly because of price and my complete satisfaction with every single one of my sets.

For trimmers, you may want to start with the lee trimmer, also due to price, if you find yourself loading enough rounds per sitting to make lee trimming uncomfortable, its worth moving up to a hand drill chucked trimmer.

Never noticed enough difference with shellholders to make a good recommendation, but the lee dies come with shellholders which is nice.

                Since you asked.

Jump in feet first and go for it! Don't pay attention to the ninnys on this forum (you will know who's a ninny and who's good immediately). Load. Shoot. Repeat.

You will make mistakes. You will learn fast. You'll load with your head screwed on straight and your mistakes will be perfectly safe (either you catch them before shooting them or you shoot them and the mistake is terrible accuracy).

I also suggest you load your jacketed or cast first before going to the barnes bullets, they make for expensive lessons!

Above all, enjoy it. Loading can be as much fun as shooting if you let it.

                  oh yeha, recommendations on equipment.

Don't buy squat, you already bought the kit. Just the minimum to load and shoot. When it comes time to expand your equipment, you will have hundreds of rounds under your belt and know what you are looking for in gear. makes the search MUCH easier.

                    Welcome!

                    You did good......enjoy this obsession.

Wear safety glasses when you reload. Don't let anyone bother you while reloading. Check the powder charge carefully. Follow the book. Make notes about everything. Keep track of your brass and how many times it's been reloaded. Label the powder drop with brand and charge. When reloading a new recipe, don't reload more than 25 rounds before trying it out. Don't buy any extras until you need it. Do buy powder and boolets in bulk. Same for primers once you decide the brand you like. Stay organized, keep a clean shop with a good comfy chair. Plenty of good lighting.

                    Have fun...

Good advice. To expand on this some more, don't let anyone bother you while you aren't reloading, either.

                        Thanks everybody.
Many good points, I finish reading the Barnes manual #4, I'm waiting for the manual that comes with the kit. On to start Reloading I will wait some time before I will do the first batch, because I have no empty shells for none of the calibers I have. I also need to buy the shell holders, Dies and a few other tools that I need. I will be looking into the reloading classes to attend one.
                        Thanks once again

I will try to attend one of those classes another time. I want to have some more equipment ready some dies and brass first before I take the class.
