    Primer Question

I hand primed about 300 casing of 223 without trimming. Found out afterword that the trim length was a bit to long. The trimmer I have uses pilots so needs to be deprimed to trim. Yes I'm newer to reloading and should have checked before priming. Anyways, just deprimed all of them and trimmed and was able to recapture all the primers. Can I reuse those primers? Or do I scrap them and call it my $10 lesson learned? They look fine but thought I'd ask before making another possible mistake.

Lee quick trim? Doesn't require depriming.

I'll probably upgrade to that sooner or later. Using the lyman ez trim as of now and works good enough for a beginner

What is a bit long? You can shoot them if your rifle has sufficient headspace. If the trim length is 1.760" or shorter, it shouldn't have issues as that's the SAAMI max, but most rifles have a little extra room.

Some were measuring 1.767 and 1.766. They had been fired twice without trimming. Watch me have done all that for nothing

As for reusing the primers. I would just chalk it up as a lesson learned......Use Fresh primers.....

Toss the primers. You might have deformed the anvils and a dud, or slam fire, is just too much of a PITA to deal with considering primers are very cheap.........when you can find them.

That's where I was leaning. Lesson learned and now I know to just make sure Trim Length Is good BEFORE priming. Thanks

I have deprimed and reused maybe 8-10 rifle primers without issue but certainly not 300. They were deprimed very slowly and gently.

If you are tossing 300 primers shouldn't you do something to deactivate them? Soak them in water?

I cut the pin off my lee hand trimmer. I can trim with primers installed. I dont use the holder.

hoenstly reuse the primers, i had deprimed 100 338 lapua cases as i had forgotten something. reprimed them and all 100 shot.

Look into either the lee zip trim or the file trim dies.
primer, powder, projecile, press, load, fire repeat!

For 223 I use a RCBS 3-way cutter in my case lathe, powered by my Ryobi.

Oh I wouldn't deprime, I would just trim with a different tool.

If you are just making plinking ammo then i would reuse them, if not then toss them.

If you don't have a headspace gauge, I'd load a couple and see if they cycle. 1.766" probably is going to fine for AR plinking. Otherwise, OP, what's your location? Find someone nearby with a Giraud and those can be handled in a few minutes.
