At 500 yards, build a load profile; either do sets or a ladder tests. What reloading manual are you using? What press? What powder scale? I'd be more worried about your powder dispenser accuracy then the primers. You may also want to run a ballistic calculator (input reloading manual max load data), and see what fps the bullet is at 500 yards since you are going with a 223 round, 75 grain or not.

There are no issues withe the plastic tips when reloading so don't worry about precautions beyond the reloading norm.

Lyman 49 and Lee 2nd although I would like to look at the Hornady too
      Lee single stage
My digital gold & gem scale which is very accurate in grains w/ a dribbler

Lyman has the start load rec at 23 gr @ 2606 FPS plan on .5 gr increments from there to max rec

        For primers, use Rem 7 1/2 BR, CCI450, CCI 41s, BR4, or Wolf/Tula 5.56M

        Don't ever crimp!

For 75 AMax, load it long and start with a jump of 0.020". Since you have a WOA barrel, you have a wylde chamber. If so, the powder charge is between 23 to 24.5 grains.

Am I right that he will have to be single loading these amax's? I think they are too long to be seated to magazine length. I would have gone with the 75 BTHP instead of the VLD amax.

The 75gr A-max is a wonderful thing to shoot. Yes you have to single load, but they are amazing.

            • I don't crimp and see no reason to do so.
            • You can't pickup a bad small rifle primer. All the CCIs have a hard enough cup for the AR. I like Tula KVB556M primers the most but that's because they are cheap and that's what I shoot.
            • You want 24.5gr of Varget. That is well hot and over max. Don't actually do it but that's what you want.
            • Seat the bullet to touching the lands, then work back in .030" increments. When you find a good spot go up and down .015" to find which of the three are best.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

Milo knows what hes talking about.I too use 24.5 of Varget, from my 20inch barrel I get 2800fps with a bthp .Expect less with a 16inch barrel ,but still more than enough to go 500yds.

Thanks guys for the useful info. I did get 1k of CCI#41 from the LGS today.

I plan on making some BTHP for a bulk of the stuff, just wanna play with the A Max some.

Single load ammo. I got some of those 75 grn A-max and they are great with my Stag 24" varmint barrel 1/8 twist. Varget is also what I use, but getting low on that powder so CI have to play with TAC.
