    Safe Powder Storage?

So the various reloading manuals, following a discussion regarding the properties of smokelss powder, suggest checking local codes for the proper and safe storage of the powder. I googled a bit and only came up with a snippet from the 1992 NFPA code:

10-3.7 Smokeless propellants intended for personal use in quantities not exceeding 20 lb (9.1 kg) may be stored in original containers in residences. Quantities exceeding 20 lb (9.1 kg) but not exceeding 50 lb (22.7 kg), may be stored in residences if kept in a wooden box or cabinet having walls of at least 1-inch (25.4 mm) nominal thickness.

That said, how are you all storing your powder? If you don't have a garage, what options do you have? Is there any legal implications surrounding storage of gunpowder in an apartment, since you're in close proximity to your neighbors? I guess that might be found in the lease agreement... Can anyone else relate to gun ownership/reloading in an apartment?

does the quanity mean per container or total per household?,or in the same vicinity? if i keep 20 pounds in the house can i keep another 10 in my cars trunk(along with the box of oily rags, road flares and leaky blitz can)

its not like i am a buccaner with a wooden cask of powder but what if i have 40 different 1pound containers in various rooms

I store it under the bed...on my wife's side. Actually, your main concern with storing powder should be to avoid inadvertent ignition, and to minimize ignition in the event of a small fire. Storing power next to the furnace or hot water heater is not a great idea. I have some old wood boxes that are great for storing powder and ammo. The wood offers pretty good insulation, at least until the point that the box is engulfed in a fire, which by that point means the structure is lost and a little extra fuel is no big deal.

Now that's FUNNY! Thanks for the laugh!
I've heard a few things..... If you reload ammunition, It must be posted on the exterior of your door, storage of over 50 lbs of powder requires a permit, If you own more than 30 guns you must register as an armory. Who really knows?

I don't really worry about it
I would not put it between me and the exit but other then that your house is already burning before your powder burns off
