    Wobbling 168 grain Matchking loads

    Hello all,

    After loading a couple hundred 308 168 grain Matchking loads I accidently noticed one wobble on the bench. To my horror they all have some wobble although some are better than others.

    These are being loaded on a Dillon 650 with Dillon dies. Just got off the phone with Dillon which was no help. They recommend to clean the die which has been done. The sized brass looks straight but I am not 100% certian they are. I see no neck wobble when rolling them.

    Any ideas????

          A few possibilities come to mind.

          1.) The bullets are just slightly undersized.

          2.) The necks haven't been sized down sufficiently. Depending on whether this has happened before, it might be a good idea to polish your decapper/expander rod down by a thousandth of an inch (0.001").

          3.) This particular batch of brass tends to have thinner necks.

          Are you full-length-sizing or neck-sizing?

            I will check the bullets. There were sized using a Dillon full length die using WCC10 brass.

            The funny thing is other bullets seem OK but I need to dig through my stash and check all of them.

              My best load is 168 gr. match kings are in 7 mm rem mag. Could the taper crimp be a little too tight?

                Load "match-grade" ammo on a single stage press and save the progressive loader for your "blaster" or plinking loads..

                Accept that good things require some extra time and effort.

                  They have no crimp.

                  These are being loaded one at a time directly in station 3. The brass is already sized, trimed and primed. Powder is dispensed using a RCBS 1500. I can't do it any better than that.

                    What that wobble is ... is called runout.

                    If you can visibly see the runout then there is something wrong with your setup. I would suspect that there is either something wrong with the seating die setup, or something wrong with your sizer die.

                    To check the runout; it is best to get a dedicated tool to do this. Personally, I use the RCBS Case Master Concentricity Tool.

                    You can check the runout of your loaded rounds and you can check to see whether or not you got runout of your full length sized brass.

                    I seriously doubt that it is the projectile. Sierra 168 grain Match Kings are very high quality projectiles.

                      i use a Hornady concentricity gauge. it has a screw/ adjustment on the tool to set the bullet straight. shouldn't add to much time to the process

                        More ammunition is reloaded with excessive bullet runout for the simple reason the decapping spindle/expander button is locked down off center than any other reason.
                        Note, extractor dings in the case rim can cause the case to tilt on the down stroke of the ram and induce runout.

                        You "NEED" three tools for making precision ammunition.

                        1. A neck thickness gauge, if you do not have even neck thickness it can cause runout problems.

                        2. A runout gauge to check your resized case necks for runout and for checking the runout of your seated bullets.

                        3. A VLD inside deburring tool to make the bullets easier to seat "straight".

                        You can't make good ammo with bad brass, meaning cases with uneven case wall and neck thickness.

                        Checking the cases after coming out of the resizing die lets you know if something is wrong with die setup or the brass.

                        Checking the bullet runout after seating the bullet again lets you know if the die is not set up correctly or if another problem exists. You do not load 200 rounds and then check for runout and then guess where you went wrong.

                        As stated above you do not use a progressive press for accurate precision ammunition. You need a single stage press that cams over and resizes each case the same. I use Redding Competition Shell Holders that allows the bottom of the die to make hard contact with the shell holder. This eliminates any flex in the press and gives you better uniformity with your brass.

                        I use the Redding neck thickness gauge, and one quick rotation of the case lets you know the case neck variations in thickness.

                            All rounds wobble. Some wobble more. Some wobble less. Wobble is called runout. Runout is caused by a number of factors, primarily by the case itself. Even if you set up your dies perfect on a single stage press, you'll still get runout, although much less of it.

                            To reduce runout during seating, seat half way, spin the case 180 degrees, and finish seating. Can you do that without indexing?

                              youve been loading ona 650 and it took a lot of time?
                              i generally neck size my 308 only, if Im going to go for extreme accuracy,
                              unless youre shooting out of a semi auto, in which there is probably some accuracy youre still leaving on the table as a compromise for reliability.
